More comments are good but I would like to stress three thingsOriginally posted by The man who was death:would like more comments on poems so it could help us improve on our poetry writing.
would like to see dps attracting ppl who are not interested in poetry to come in and try to appreciate poetry
That is why I am glad we have poetry writing competition here in DPS (S). When I first started it back in 2004 I have no idea how far it will go.Originally posted by fudgester:To have more and more people contributing poems to DPS.
To get more people to appreciate poetry.
That is going to be quite difficult.Originally posted by expiringpoet:Reading sessions could be a session where someone reads a poem, and the rest can comment on what they like or don't like about that poetry.
Reading sessions could be a way in which everyone gets to participate and at the same time, improve our critical and communication skills too!
I'm quite sure it will be difficultOriginally posted by DeadPoet:That is going to be quite difficult.
Any comments from the rest regarding this?
You are not at all preachy. I like honest thoughts.Originally posted by expiringpoet:I'm quite sure it will be difficult
I dont expect everyone to agree to this suggestion cos we generally have reservations about expressing ourselves in public. I know i do.
But i personally think that to be good at poetry, we need to train ourselves to read a poem properly as well as to listen to how others read. At the last reading, I noticed there are good and confident readers and there are others that are learning to be good and confident. To me the important thing is the learning. Cos we never know if we can be good unless we try.
Sorry if this sounds preachy. But they're my honest thoughts.
Unless you have been at poetry readings for a long time and you have a literary position in regards to poetry writing, I think it's a bit much to expect indepth analysis to be given on the spot.Originally posted by DeadPoet:You are not at all preachy. I like honest thoughts.
What I am more concern with is regarding live feedbacks. IMO, it is going to be quite meaningless since most of us will only give simple one sentence feedback rather than in-depth analysis.
Will not be very helpful to the reading poet.
You have a good point!Originally posted by DeadPoet:What I am more concern with is regarding live feedbacks. IMO, it is going to be quite meaningless since most of us will only give simple one sentence feedback rather than in-depth analysis.
True, it's more realistic to have some time to prepare first Anyway, i was thinking it could be more of like the Poetry Slam concept, where it's more impromptu you know? Dont need to be so serious, just say "I like!" or "don't like!". No need to go in-depth explanations unless you want to. Just keep it fun and wacky if possible so everyone enjoys it instead of it being so stressfulOriginally posted by Bluesky_Liz:Unless you have been at poetry readings for a long time and you have a literary position in regards to poetry writing, I think it's a bit much to expect indepth analysis to be given on the spot.
When people give indepth analysis during reading session, it's only because it's been prepared before hand. People who are going to read submit their poems to the circle in advance (like a week or two). On the day of the reading, after the poet reads, the people give all their prepared comments verbally. (Of course, they would also comment on what they think of the reading and how it compares to how they think they themselves would have read it). It's not reality to expect analysis on-the-fly.
I agree with you totally.Originally posted by expiringpoet:True, it's more realistic to have some time to prepare first Anyway, i was thinking it could be more of like the Poetry Slam concept, where it's more impromptu you know? In that case that should be simple enough.Originally posted by expiringpoet:True, it's more realistic to have some time to prepare first Anyway, i was thinking it could be more of like the Poetry Slam concept, where it's more impromptu you know? hrm. what i'll be stating is what i want from myself, as a member of DPS (S), and i think a few others would share my sentiments.Originally posted by DeadPoet:For example,
More competitions?
More reading sessions?
More comments?
More gatherings?
Or maybe you want to see some changes/improvements or you have a few good suggestions that you will love to share?
Please post them here.
Actually I wanted to say something, but never mind.Originally posted by expiringpoet:I've got some old tennis socks...teddybears...

i hope to be more open and less guarded in giving opinions and in posting my poems here. a lot of times, i am afraid to go into the details i see in each poem posted here. because as much as i believe in what i think, i also acknowledge the fact that poetry is subjective. that is what holds me back from saying more.
so in time to come i hope (for myself and for everyone who feels like i do) to be able to be specific (when we know we are able to) in the comments given. eg. if i don't like a certain poem, state why i don't like it, instead of just "oh. i didn't really like this".
for now, i am still trying to muster up enough courage to post a poem here. i chickened out once.
That's true.Originally posted by blue_blue_bedsheet:Hopefully more poetry sharing where everyone could appreciate.
