Island State

I could never keep track of all the names
the critics claim for my beloved,
a once-colony of sapphire isles squeezed
on a pinhead of a city state.
More than just Safire, the caning
of Michael Fay, Singapore is
the apostrohpe before a stop --
An iron tree raised above a colonial crop,
roots unseen, it blooms in waterless shade.

Something I shrugged out over lunch. -
Well if it raises too high, the lighting will strikes.

Macross, this poem wasn't about something I saw over lunch (truth be told, I usually churn out about 3-4 poems during lunch and throughout the workday).
It was an idea that stuck in my head -- I was in the middle of an article when I started to muse about the difference in connotation when the words "city state" and "island state" are interchanged. -
3-4 is a lot....I haven't written that much in ages..

I like the idea of the iron tree... just that to me, it's more like an iron tree with a ... I don't know... decaying core... to some extent...
