Workshop outline:This workshop suggests ways to identify, appreciate the fundamentals of reading and writing good poetry.
Participants will work on reading and writing exercises to familiarise themselves to the basics of metaphor, rhyme, rhythm, form, diction and theme. The exercises also serve as practical ways for writers to hone their editing skills, and enhance their understanding of what poetry is and what it can do.
Scope: What is a poem? (Example, differences between poetry & prose, etc)
Types of poems (Examples, blank verse, sonnets, etc)
How do poems express ideas? (Example, concrete/abstract, etc)
Reading a poem (Example, pronunciation, punctuation, etc)
Writing a poem (Example, form, content, style, etc)
Workshop, discussion and exercises may include: Reading out loud – poetry as “the human voice, scored”
Letting it go: rhyme, rhythm, metre and style
Casting a line - exploring the effectiveness of line-breaks and punctuation
Metaphor Games – lateral thinking in action
Le Just Mot – the right word in the right place
Bringing out your theme: Form following content

This workshop is aimed at beginning and aspiring writers of poetry who want some practical advice on how to develop and hone their craft.
A written portfolio of 5-10 poems is welcome but not compulsory during registration. This is for you to reflect upon your poems during the workshop and not for open discussion. However, it is alright to approach Alvin after the workshop if you need any helps regarding your poems.
Registration is now open at Bishan Community Club. Payment can be done by cash, cheque, or NETs.
About the Facilitator:Alvin Pang (b. Singapore, 1972) holds 1st class honours in Literature from the University of York and a Fellowship in Writing from the University of Iowa's International Writing Program (2002). As a poet, he has been featured in major publications and festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh International Book Festival. He contributes commentary to The Straits Times, and is a founding director of the Wordfeast international poetry festival and The Literary Centre (Singapore). He manages several literary websites including poetrybillboard.com, writer.per.sg and verbosity.net. His books include Testing the Silence (1997), City of Rain (2003) and such anthologies as No Other City: The Ethos Anthology of Urban Poetry (2000).
