Youths set records at this year's National Day Parade SINGAPORE : A record number of youths are taking part in this year's National Day Parade.
Some 85 percent of the 9,000 participants are not only young, some are also setting records as they perform.
Bearing torches of fire, Deyi Secondary students engulf the stadium with their enthusiasm.
First-time participants at the parade, they set another record for being the first parade performers to bear live fiery props.
Performing in the same act of the show segment are students from Telok Kurau Secondary.
The school, which also turns 39 this year, is no stranger to the parade -- their students have performed twice before -- but they are among the first percussion school bands in Singapore.
Students like Nur Fatin picked up new instruments from the world over to jive to a new tune for the nation's birthday celebration.
Secondary 2 student Fatin learnt the agogo bells and the mirimba and she enjoys keeping to the beat.
"I feel kind of nervous but then it's great," she said. "It's a good experience for me as this is my first time playing and it's worth it because I'm doing it for Singapore."
Audiences in the spectator stands can still keep in rhythm with the performers by taking out percussion instruments from their goodie bags and joining in the music. - CNA
