  try this counter-intuitive approach...
  
  Asterix comics...
  
  and then get them to figure out how many and why each character is so.. and the history of the time... and what they did then...
  
  they had so much in there... Caesar, Cleopatra, the Gauls, the Celtics, the Games and all that... not to mention their names, the places...
  
  and all very very funny too...
  
  the interaction of the characters and why they were like that...
  
  over the years, i still think that the whole series was pure genius

  i am trying comics too. but prob is i cant be sure if he really reads the words or just looks at the pictures, especially when i dont have alot of time to supervise him.
  
  but i guess if he is interested enuff by the pictures he would be interested to attempt to read the words..
