English reading material for secondary school

  hi,
  
  looking for books, articles, resources and other reading materials (err..no fashion or entertainment magazines) that are suitable for lower secondary students.
  
  really to use these materials to teach english, and to spark their interest and encourage them to read.
  
  any recommendations?

  we use to read reader digest during lower sec....then sch improve to reading strait times.....

  Memoirs of a Geisha is not bad. Contained lots of adjectives, will definitely increase your vocab bank if read like twice. But its kinda long winded. So its better to quote paras from the whole book. Clay Marble by Mingfo Ho. All the books by her are good. Um.. Rice without Rain etc.

  thanks for all the suggestions although i think FEER and IHT can hardly be used as educational material for lower sec students.
  
  what books are being used for lower sec lit? can they do? or would they be too cheem? i still rem last time i read i am david and sing to the dawn, but i cant rem whether they are too deep or not.
  
  what about resources? websites, collections?
  
  anyway i have been using short stories from singapore ghost stories. anything parallels to draw?

  got, the last few pages got fashion and entertainment, maybe it might be useful. sg ghost stories english sux, imo.

  Sg Ghost Stories series IMO have lousy writing.
  
  To spark interest, start with entertaining stuff like popular youth novels e.g. the Princess Diaries, Artemis Fowl. Or books that have spawned movie adaptations.
  
  Trade magazines like FEER may be too technical but rags like Newsweek cover a wide genre of topics. Some articles on entertainment or society are interesting and easy for readers to relate to.

  You can try works by Catherine Lim which has a strong local flavour and not too difficult to read also.

  hm... thanks! my sense is also to start from what he is interested in - and it so happens he likes ghost stories.
