No reported injuries after fire breaks out at Katong Square
SINGAPORE: A fire broke out at a distribution box located at 86 East Coast Road on Saturday night (Jun 25). There were no reported injuries, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
A check by Channel NewsAsia showed that 86 East Coast Road is part of Katong Square, an integrated development that includes boutique hotel Hotel Indigo, as well as food and beverage outlets.
When Channel NewsAsia visited the scene, scores of people had been evacuated and were waiting along East Coast Road for further information.
Ms Julya Chan, who was on a staycation with her family at the neighbouring Holiday Inn Express, said she smelt smoke, and guests were told to evacuate soon after.
At about 11.10pm, staff from Holiday Inn Express, located at 88 East Coast Road, were heard saying that everything is safe, and asked guests to return to the hotel.
SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at about 10.15pm on Saturday and despatched a fire engine, three Red Rhinos, an ambulance and four support appliances to the scene. The fire involved a distribution box and the blaze was confined within the box, SCDF said, adding that it was extinguished using a dry powder extinguisher.
SCDF added that management from 88 East Coast Road evacuated about 300 guests "as a precautionary measure" before SCDF arrived on the scene.
Channel NewsAsia has reached out to the management of Katong Square for comment.
