Tampines 1 evacuated due to car fire
SINGAPORE: Tampines 1 was evacuated on Friday afternoon (Nov 13) after a car caught fire in the basement car park.
Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) vehicles and officers seen at the shopping mall.
No injuries were reported.
At about 2pm, shoppers were seen outside the shopping centre, after smoke was seen in the building. Smoke was also seen coming out from the car park.
Members of the public were evacuated from the building, and all mall entrances were cordoned off with police tape. At about 2.30pm, members of the public were allowed back into the mall, except for the car park.
Muhammad Hafiz, 20, who works at Typo in Tampines 1, told Channel NewsAsia that he was told to evacuate along with his customers by the mall security.
Car owners could only leave at 3pm. At that point, the basement car park was drenched.
In a statement, AsiaMalls, which owns Tampines 1, said that a parked Mini Cooper caught fire in the Basement 2 of the mall. The SCDF was alerted at 1.20pm and the incident is now "under control".
AsiaMalls said that the mall management team evacuated all shoppers and staff of tenants by 1.37pm and all smoke has been extracted from the building.
The mall resumed operations by 3.05pm and restored power to the car park.
The owner of the burnt car, a white Mini Cooper, was later found at about 3.15pm. Channel NewsAsia understands that she was with her brother, and they had gone to buy food when they heard the fire alarm go off.
They only found out that it was their car at about 3pm.
The car owners refused to comment.
