An elderly woman was trapped under a bench at a community club (CC) after she fell through the gap between the bench and a wall on Tuesday evening.
The woman, who is in her 60s and believed to weigh 120kg, was understood to have been sleeping on the bench beside a flight of stairs at Jurong Spring CC, evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported yesterday.
She was trapped for about 20 minutes and later rescued by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). She was conscious when taken to the National University Hospital.
The gap between the bench and the wall flanking the stairs was estimated to be about 30cm wide, Wanbao reported.
A 34-year-old cleaner by the name of Azhar said the woman's face was turned to one side and she was unable to get herself out.
Some members of the public tried to rescue her but to no avail, and they called SCDF for help.
SCDF said that it received a call at 6.11pm and sent a fire engine and an ambulance to the scene. SCDF personnel used a grinder to cut the bench near its base, so that the bench's seat could be removed to free the woman.
