A fire broke out at a food court in Singapore Polytechnic (SP) on Thursday afternoon.
Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they received a call at 12.57pm about a fire at 500 Dover Road.
There were no reported injuries.
The
SCDF deployed two red rhinos, two fire bikes and one fire engine to the
scene. The blaze was confined to the exhaust duct and extinguished
within 10 minutes.
On SP’s Facebook page,
the school wrote that the “fire alarm was triggered and campus security
was on site to ensure that students and staff were evacuated orderly
and safely”.
The fire involved an exhaust duct from one of the
stalls in the canteen, SCDF said. In an email addressed to students,
SP's director of estates and development C. Pannirselvam said the fire
broke out in a stall selling economy rice.
"Flame from the
cooking pan spread to the exhaust duct within the stall. This was
aggravated by grease residue within the duct causing the fire to spread
to the roof top," the director said.
The blaze was confined to the exhaust duct and extinguished within 10 minutes.
Food
court 4, where the incident occurred, will be temporarily closed until
Monday for repair and clean up. The school told students, in an email,
that all other areas affected by fire-fighting operations will be
thoroughly cleaned to ensure no contamination. The polytechnic has six
food courts.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
