SINGAPORE - A fire broke out at a factory at 28 Riverside Road at lunchtime today. Eyewitness Mohammad Hidir, who called the MediaCorp hotline, said the fire seemed to have come from on the second floor of what appeared to be a paint and metal factory. He said five fire engines and an ambulance were at the scene. The plume of black smoke could be seen from as far as Woodlands.
The fire, which eyewitnesses said started around 11.50am, appeared to have been put out by 1.30pm by Singapore Civil Defence Force firemen. It is not yet known what caused the blaze to start.

Fire at Riverside Road factory under control
SINGAPORE: The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said on Thursday that the fire at a factory building at 28 Riverside Road was under control at 1pm and was not in danger of spreading.
SCDF received call at about noon and arrived at the site at 12.10pm.
When SCDF arrived, the staff in the factory building had already evacuated the building.
Seven water jets were deployed to put out the fire.
According to SCDF, the fire was confined to the fourth floor of the building and was less than the size of a football field.
SCDF also said the fire involved some paint and thinner, but it is still investigating the exact cause of the fire.
According to our Channelnewsasia reporter at the location, the area around the fire smelled of burning plastic.

Fire at No. 28 Riverside Road
SCDF was alerted to a case of fire at No. 28 Riverside Road at 1201hrs on 9 February 2012. 2 Fire Engines, 2 Red Rhinos, 5 Supporting Vehicles and 1 ambulance were immediately dispatched to the incident site.
Upon the arrival of SCDF resources, the fire was raging and thick black smoke could be seen.
The fire was confined to the 4th storey of the four-storey building and involved spray paint products and timber. The intense fire engulfed an area of approximately half a football field. Donning breathing apparatus sets, SCDF firefighters brought the fire under control within one hour using 7 water jets.
The occupants of the building self evacuated prior to the arrival of SCDF.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
