STOMPer Amy spotted clouds of black smoke emitting from
Blk 18 along Beach Road. According to her, smoke started emerging from
the building at about 4.50pm today (30 Mar).
Says the STOMPer:
"I couldn't see much, as I was in the office building that is opposite Blk 18.
"I can't see if there were any casualties."
Said another STOMPer in an email:
"I'm not sure if there is anyone inside but the rescue is in progress."
A statement from the SCDF said:
"At 4.48pm, SCDF was alerted to a fire at a HDB unit at Blk 18 Jalan Sultan.
"Upon
receiving the notification, one fire engine, one Red Rhino, two fire
bikes, one ambulance and one support vehicle were dispatched.
"Upon arrival, a unit on the third floor of the block was on fire.
"SCDF fire-fighters quickly deployed 2 water jets.
"The fire was confined within the unit and was brought under control within 10 minutes.
"As a safety precaution, residents from the fourth to sixth floor of the block were evacuated.
"At the time of this report, there were no reports of anyone being injured.
"The cause of fire is under investigation."
