A SINGAPOREAN man died after he and two other workers were trapped in a manhole on Monday.
The 43-year-old was working on underground cabling at Jurong East Avenue 1 when the accident occurred shortly before 6pm. Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers arrived at the scene at about 6pm.
Fellow workers managed to rescue one of the trapped men. The SCDF officers used a pulley to help evacuate the other two, but one was pronounced dead at 6.55pm at the scene.
SCDF said both survivors were semi-conscious and had complained of breathlessness. They were taken to the National University Hospital.
A witness, Mr Mohamad Rohul, 24, said that cabling works had started in the area for about three days. But yesterday was the first time he had seen workers in the manhole where the accident occurred.
No further details were available at press time. The police and the Ministry of Manpower are investigating.
