SCDF to step up checks on commercial premises using bottled gas
SINGAPORE: The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will step up checks on commercial premises using bottled or cylinder gas.
The move comes after owners of such premises were reminded last year not to use them for safety reasons.
Eateries like steamboat or 'bak kut teh' (pork rib soup) restaurants
can no longer use cylinder gas in areas where food is served to
customers.
But some eateries are still doing so because the switch to gas
canisters or installing gas pipes is expensive. And those using
electric stoves are unsure if their electricity bill has increased.
The SCDF said it will check on these eateries, as well as suppliers of cylinder gas, to ensure safety is not compromised.
First-time offenders may be fined S$500. Subsequent offenders who
persist in using or supplying cylinder gas to these eateries could be
charged in court. They could face a fine of up to $10,000 or a jail
term of up to six months, or both.
