SCDF issued 77% more fire hazard warnings in first 6 months of year
The Singapore Civil Defence Force, SCDF, issued 77 per cent more warnings against fire hazards in the first six months of this year.
This it said was partly due to the 18 per cent increase in enforcement checks conducted in the period.
Under the Fire Safety Act, the Fire Hazard Abatement Notice or FHAN serves as a warning to building owners and management to remove the hazard.
SCDF says the most common fire hazards that contributed to the FHANs were poor maintenance of fire extinguishers and hose reels, and obstructed exits.
Building owners or management can be taken to court if they fail to rectify the safety violations despite warnings and fines.
SCDF says it took court action against 32 offenders in the first six months of the year for violations against fire safety rules and regulations.
This is an increase of 23 cases from last year.
