A FIRE broke out in a shophouse unit selling used refrigerators at Dickson Road on Monday morning.
The SCDF contained the fire and had it under control within 15 minutes of their arrival; it did not spread to neighbouring units.
Most of the damage was confined to the first storey of the unit, with little disturbance occuring on the upper level.
Madam Tan Ah Pann, 78, the owner of the shophouse unit, was having coffee nearby when her friend informed her of the fire.
The elderly woman, who does not reside at the shophouse unit, said: 'The shop wasn't open. Business has been bad and I've been wanting to sell off the unit but there haven't been buyers. And then this happened.'
She is unsure of the costs incurred by the fire and estimates that it is in the 'thousands'. The shophouse unit was not covered by insurance.
Resigned, Madam Tan added: 'I don't want to think about it. When I arrived, the fire was put out already. I don't think the damage will cost that much.'
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
