SINGAPORE: The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) conducted a
Civil Defence Shelter Open House at three Circle Line MRT stations -
Bishan, Lorong Chuan and Bartley - on Saturday.
This is part of the SCDF's continuous efforts to build up
Singapore's civil defence preparedness under the umbrella of total
defence.
The aim is to sustain public awareness on civil defence shelters and emergency preparedness measures.
The SCDF also hopes to familiarise members of public on the use of shelters during an emergency.
Mayor for Central Singapore District, Zainudin Nordin, was given a tour of the shelter at Bishan MRT station.
Mr Zainudin said: "Having such an exercise, opening the places for
our residents to see for themselves and understand their role, at the
same time knowing there's such a facility, will give Singaporeans more
comfort and awareness of what they can do and how they can do it in an
emergency."
Among the facilities available in the shelter was a decontamination
chamber to cope with chemical threats. The SCDF also showed that even
train carriages can double up as shelter areas.
An estimated 10,000 visitors had a chance to experience the tour at
the stations. The visitors were mostly organised groups from the
various constituencies, schools and institutions.
