Fire at Jalan Papan factory, no injuries reported
SINGAPORE: A fire broke out at a recycling factory in Jurong
industrial estate on Tuesday. Thick clouds of smoke were spotted by
residents living near Jalan Papan just past the noon hour.
Civil defence officers rushed to the scene to find a heap of
recycled materials on fire. The area affected by the blaze grew to 20
metres by 30 metres before the flames were brought under control.
No injuries were reported and investigations on the cause of the fire are still ongoing.
The company which owns the warehouse, CH E-Recycling (CHE), deals with
recycling and trading of electronic wastes and scrap metals.
In a filing to the Singapore Exchange, its parent company Equation
Corp said CHE has lodged an insurance claim and the insurance company
is currently surveying and assessing the damage.
It added that the management of CHE has taken immediate measures to
address the related operational issues. The company will make further
announcements on the incident in due course.
Major Eric Chua, officer commanding, Jurong Fire Station, said:
"When we arrived, the fire conditions were very strong and this posed a
challenge for us because it could have easily spread to other areas. So
we had to work fast – we worked with four different jets and brought
the fire under control in 20 minutes."
