SCDF to step up fire safety checks during festive season
SINGAPORE : The Singapore Civil Defence Force will be stepping up inspection checks at public premises to detect fire safety violations during this festive season.
It has also urged the public to continue to be vigilant against fire occurrences.
Owners and management of public buildings and places of recreation and entertainment, including hotels and shopping centres, are reminded to ensure compliance to all safety requirements.
This will help keep such premises safe even as they experience an upsurge in people visiting such outlets.
SCDF says that escape passageways should be free of obstruction and fire exit doors should be kept unlocked for use during emergencies.
Overcrowding in building premises, especially public entertainment outlets, such as discotheques and pubs, should be avoided.
This is to prevent a stampede situation if evacuation is required.
Under the Fire Safety Act, those found to have violated rules may be fined up to S$10,000 or jailed up to six months or to both.
Anyone detecting fire hazards may call SCDF's hotline 1800-734-4308. - CNA/ms
