Career as a firefighter

  Hi all,
  
  I'm considering a career as a firefighter. May i know the pros n cons of a firefighter career?
  btw my highest qualification is higher nitec.

  Hey, thanks for e replies.. aniwae i oreadi applied last wk.. as u all know i onli haf a higher nitec.. but i decided to sign on because i want a stable career, also i haf plans on furthering my studies while in scdf.. so hopefully i can rise thru e ranks slowly n eventually might become an officer..
  
  also being in e scdf is to me a more worthwhile career than being in army or police, no offence to those who are in those 2.. it's just tat being in e scdf.. u will learn to save lives.. u are on e frontline everyday helping ppl.. so to me la.. it is a noble job..
  
  Aniwae.. wat i want to know is.. how is e 6 mths training like..?, anything i haf to take note of.. like how to prepare myself physically or mentally for e training.

  Definately so because they are considered the "frontliners" of SCDF & if the training is not siong then its not the firefighters who fight the fires but instead its the fire who fights the firefighters

  10km runs on alternate days...
  
  32km route marches with river crossing in between...
  
  nites of not sleeping...
  
  SOC with stretcher...mop and dummy mags....
  
  7-11s on the SOC ground...?
  
  walking at nites aimlessly and attacking at each dawn for 4 days....

  Just heard from my frens who have posted to the fireman vocation that the physical training is quite tough & its definately not for the faint hearted

  each has its shiongness ba. but i feel fire fighter is more meaningful than any army vocations

  Hi all.. how long usually until i get to know if my application is successful?
  
  Aniwae i've oreadi completed e 2nd set of online questionaire n send in my documents.
  
  Anyone here can tell me wat to expect for e interviews n e steps i have to take until i finally get to be a firefighter.
  
  oh n one more thing.. is there anything i can do to prepare myself physically n mentally if n when i am accepted in?

  I will not ever consider it cos most of the firefighters are Malays with low educational level. I will not want to work with pigs all day long.

  Please disregard the superstar's reply. I'm sure he can't stand the sight of 'Malay pigs' like me. And I take it that everyone is intelligent enough to realise that he does not represent the general populace of NUS.
  
  In any case, bear in mind that being a firefighter means that you're pretty much putting your life on the line day in, day out. Well, you won't get fires every single day, of course, but remember that every fire that you have to tackle is a dance with danger.
  
  That said, it's a worthy profession, regardless of what that 'superstar' says. The rest of us run away from fires. You run into fires. And I truly salute you for that if that's what you really want to do.

  Yea.. i'm not bothered by e "superstar" comments.. everyone is entitled to his/her own opinions even if's racist or wat..
  
  So aniwae fudgester.. i've oreadi gave a lot of thought into it n being a firefighter is wat i want to do in my life.. i've overcome a few obstacles when i want to apply for it.. namely being a pes bp n working myself out until i get a pes upgrade to b(scdf dun accept pes bp ppl as regular). Actualli i was due to be enlist in e obese batch at tekong last wk but i was given a postponement as i just upgrade my pes.. i did all tat just so i could get a chance to apply for scdf..
  
  So now i just want to gather more info about a firefighter career.. n just hoping tat i could be called for e interview asap..

  I can see that you've got the commitment and the will to be a firefighter. I think those are traits that we can all learn from you.
