Btw anyone knows if PCG is going to open direct recruitment for SPOs, if at all? -

Only heard of a A/P from NIE , he used to serve in the PCG during his time. But for reservist he's been posted to Division. -

Amist the many feedbacks that have been posted, all I can say is ... we can never understand their position until we are in their shoes.
Being a sea-farer myself, it is not an easy job to be navigating out at sea. This is on top of fulfilling their role as a police officer on a floating vessel. I have often sail close to Singapore Territorial Waters' border ... like Indonesia, Malaysia and even to Horsburg Lighthouse waters ... you will start to realise sometimes handphone communication is totally unavailable. (Try sailing to Raffles Lighthouse and you will see for yourself)
PCG works in an entirely different environment compared to other land divisions brothers. It is much more demanding having to cope with the seamanship, policing duties and also extra roles out at sea (for e.g assisting MPA, Navy etc). I have land division friends ... who had transferred to PCG and request to be posted back to their original unit. Why? The responsibility is too great ... far greater than what they thought. The demands of a PCG officer, is beyond what other officers see on the surface or from hear-say.
It is also common knowledge by now, the entire SPF is working on 12 hours shift. (Forget about office hours staff who are entitled to 5 days work-week) Unlike cars on the roads, it takes a much longer time for a boat to travel back to their individual base than a FRC returning to their station. Land divisions officers whom have tried out life as a PCG officer will know exactly what I mean. A 12 hour shift often stretches to 14 or 15 hours and beyond. Sailing out at sea is totally different from driving a car on a brightly lit road, commonly seen. It is extremely stressful and RSS Courageous's collision has itself proved how stressful it can be. All it takes is one simple mistake to cause a disaster. The punggol collision ... amplifies this fact.
Spare a little understanding for your bf ... I believe it will do him good. I do not think you would want to kick up a fuss with him ... and have him putting his mind on domestic issues while at work. Touch wood, this may well be the reason for any accident to happen out at sea.
