Singapore uses new media to boost recruitment
Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has
seen recruitment numbers for its police, civil defence and prison
functions rise significantly this year, thanks in part to MHA’s use of
new media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube to appeal to young
Singaporean job-seekers.
More than 400 junior officers and 70 senior officers have been
recruited by the ‘Home Team’ so far this year - a more than twofold
increase on the same period in 2008. However, with a target of 1,500
officers for the whole year, Second Minister of Home Affairs K
Shanmugam said that the Ministry has “some way to go” to achieve its
recruitment goals.
“We have to step up our efforts and explore all avenues to reach out to potential candidates,” said Mr Shanmugam.
Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF)
have been two of the more notable cases of government bodies embracing
social media online in Asia. As for today (Tuesday May 26th 2009), SPF
has 4,917 Facebook ‘fans’. SCDF has 1,040.

Definitely.
They sometimes send a riot squad when there are a few people standing outside the CPF building asking about CPF monies.
Sure do.
When this crisis deepen, more will take to crime as a solution out of their financial straits, more so the foriegn workers who have the most to lose, when they cannot earn even $500 bucks to pay rent and owe $10,000 back home to 'pig/snake head' labour syndicates.
Not to mention that the JI threat is still not totally diffused yet.
I am sure more would feel a lot more safer when our OWN singaporean males and females take to the civil service such as police force to ensure our safety.

Haha... reminds me of my NS days...
Their stand is every 3 local soldiers against 1 enemy.

females?? oh please lah, i dun want to sit lazy at the neighbourhood police station for sg Uncles to see and tease.
i think the govt should crack down on corrupted policemen rather than concentrating on recruiting more police, there are alots of policemen abusing their power and corrupted that had gone unchecked, sincerely from the bottom of my heart, I hope the govt do come back up on this.

I know why bo lang, too many men in blue in front of your shop. You're too righteous!
Just because Singapore needs more POs does not mean SPF should compromise on their recruitment process for such a sensitive position. Anyway I'm not surprised that tons of graduates are rejected since there is a shortage of PO, but not SO applicants.
perhaps he failed the psycological part.
without even shortlisted, how is it possible to receive rejection letter???
That means that he failed the basic criteria.
too short
too skinny.
colour blind.
education level too low.
not singaporean/ PR.
These should be the basis to reject application.
maybe there are better ones out there den.
u said ur friend has a dip in SP, so he shd be 21 when he go to NS and 23 when he ORD. servered 3 ICT, so hes around the age of 25-26? abit old isnt it?
The employment rate is high... so is the resignation rate.

probably he failed the screening. although spf is short of ppl. they still have stringent checks on e ppl hey hire.
u wun noe what is going on in the human resource department.
maybe the application was full. as u mention, it was the 2002/2003 period, there may be no vacancies for junior officer at that moment.

unlikely... he mentioned it was at a open house... that will be like inviting people in and than kicking them out...
More likely that alot of people apply and they prefer the other candidates for what ever reasons, and he didn't make it into the interview list...
Which reminds me, what have an rejected interview 6 years ago got to do with a speech mentioned at the very first post?

What I mean is simply there are too many qualified people who can be good police officers however due to whatever strange policies that SPF is adopting, recruitment always fall short of target. The shortage of police officers can be generally attributed to insufficient intake & high turnover rate. The insufficient intake is mostly due to the hiring policies of SPF. SPF seems to adopt a weird hiring policies whereby suitable & interested people dun normally get the job. As a result, a high turnover rate is result from these people who mostly choose to leave the force after 1st contract.
