Police smash illegal video disc syndicate, 11 arrested
SINGAPORE : Police have smashed an unlicensed optical disc
syndicate in an island-wide operation and arrested 11 people on
Thursday.
The five men and six women are between 23 and 59 years old.
In the 22-hour operation, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department raided locations in Bedok and Bukit Batok.
They seized over 12,300 digital video discs containing obscene
films, 176 cartons of dutiable cigarettes, 18 colour printers, six
high-speed CD-R burners, 50,000 blank DVD-Rs, 20,000 inlays and about
S$6,000 in cash.
In a statement, police said preliminary investigations showed that
the syndicate used street peddlers to sell the illegal discs at various
entertainment outlets and industrial estates in Boat Quay, Tanjong
Pagar, Eunos and Kaki Bukit.
All 11 nabbed will be charged in court on Saturday.
If found guilty of possession pirated discs, they could each be
fined up to S$10,000 per item or S$100,000, whichever is lower, or
sentenced to a maximum jail term of five years, or both. - CNA /ls
