There is also the issue, of whether weapon was put to shoot one shot, a burst of three of rapid fire. And the direction of the weapon on sling. to have shot someone in the groin, well.....its kinda difficult to believe its accident.
Actually the shooting was indeed an accident. But there were plenty of breaches of orders with regards to weapon handling and the like.
That was the main reason why all this happened actually. Not so much to a faulty weapon.

Even for the PCG, when they have those M16 & HKMP5s, its always unloaded by the last shift, reloaded and chambered with the safety on by the new shift taking over.
Actually Kit, weapons are always personally issued to oneself via the Div/Unit armoury. Nowadays no such thing as handing/taking over of arms. All done via armoury before commencement of shifts; there are enough arms for everyone at each base.
