hey im interested in a career in the police but only as a spo. may i know whether its true selection is very limited now for spos? also is being a spo in prison different ? cos i still see job ads for prison officers so i was wondering whether there are any diff.

i am sorry that we hv no stats to support on the number of applicants to join as spo, but if you are interested, you can go for the interview and tried it out...
if you are not accepted by then, it surely imply something right?

I think you need to have really outstanding qualifications to be accepted as a direct-entry SPO.
As the saying goes: 'Zeng duo zhou shao' (monks alot, porridge very little) -

My TL just told me yesterday about 2000 applications were received for the direct-entry SPO scheme in July 2005. About 7 were eventually selected, with the rest composed of rank-and-file promotions and such.

in prison service, spo means senior prison officer. as long as u have a degree, u are eligible to apply. there is an 18-week residential training (academic, ippt, some self defence & restraint techniques). after that, u will pass out and be posted to one of the many prisons in singapore.
there are generally two types of work u can do: one is staff work (paper work either in hq or one of the prisons) and the other is operations work (direct supervision of prison inmates). every year, u are required to pass your ippt. u may also likely be required to work shifts & on phs, but u get time off for that.
the job is challenging, with the many initiatives and programmes being rolled out to help inmates in their rehabilitation, and would especially be suitable if u like helping people. -

What he means is that these rank-and-file officers were previously junior police officers (or police officers as it is known now) and promoted to be inspectors.

I'm interested in applying as a SPO too although i'm aware that there's no vacancy at the moment. Care to share more info on the SPO recruitment and inteview process? For e.g, the types and no. of interviews
involved? Types of aptitude tests?

hello i'm also another fella interested to become a Senior Police Officer.... i'm aiming for a 2nd upper or 1st class honours ...... and another qn.... will all SPO wannabe have to go thru' the police officer cadet course?

Ok, let me try fill in some blanks for aspiring officers hehe, there are ard 4-5 rounds for the selection process, and the selection is getting tighter as when compared a few years back.
For eg, in 2001, there were abt 7 batches but in 2005, there were only 3, so can do the Maths yea? Nevertheless, do try! And yes, you will have to go through the 9 months training, as for the rank-and-file, they will only go for 6 months..
