and of course the job scope... SOC mostly general trouble, STAR is big trouble -

SOC last time was suppose not to anyhow touch , standby so if got big shit, they can fast fast provide backup (manpower) ,ocationally they were let out to walk with the SAF pple at places like changi
hah hah, but nowadays SOC more busy..,they come out alot more now to do crowd control and posted as terrorist scarescrows to protect the precious foreign talents..
STAR = I suppose they are singapore's equivilant of SWAT
AFAIK, it's all Hostage situation when they kena activated -

Guys... this is a very common mistake by many to regard SOC as an individual unit, SOC actually stands for Special Operations Command and it encompass STAR, Police Task Force (PTF) and Police Dog Unit.
All these units undertake specialised roles in supporting the various land division and units.
E.g, STAR is capable of arresting of armed/dangerous criminals, providing VIP escorts, hostage rescue operations etc... They are technically different from the SAF SOF as they are responsible for more home based criminal threat, while SOF is more of terrorist threats... whereas PTF is used when there is a need for large scale crowd control, riot control and lower risk criminal incidents. If I'm not wrong, they are the ones who wore the red berets and took part in the Tekong search.... lastly, K9 unit is used to support CNB operations, customs checks and some prison searches...

haha, in Singapore we only see them, but we rarely use them... this explains the above perception... seriously, the capabilites of STAR and PTF have not been really tested...
For STAR, the most dangerous things I see them doing was coming out in large scale to arrest someone who's armed with a stolen revolver... comon, that revolver of his could'nt even hurt the STAR officer given the level of body armor they are wearing, plus armed with just a revolver, do you dare to resist when a bunch of men in black charge in with heavy firearms?? ... wait till they have to be mobilised to deal with robbers armed with heavy firearms like the Hong Kong SDU, then their capabilities are then really proven, till that happens it's all misuse of manpower
For PTF, riot control is outta question... this is Singapore leh... other than that, I think they are doing fine.... taking part in the tekong search, and doing well for the security of the IOC meeting...

Regarding the RED beret they try to copy Korea. So it doesnt matter what the hell 1st Bn thinks - but what matters is ARE THESE SOC(school of clowns) really capable or the management just wana show off again and leaving a white elephant behind. -

think there is always some reasons why SOF, NUD, SOC.. all these exist.. although they are not activated daily, do not have ops daily dun mean they are good to see.. n bu zhong yong...
only when you are part of them, then you will understand.. if not will only be good to be a sour grape...
easy to point n criticise....
think is a blessing in disguise that in Spore, we do not have heavily armed gunmen, unlike in HK. i rather the STAR is not tested than have heavily armed robbers here. At least i know is safe to walk on the street. -

STAR team stands for "Special Tactics And Rescue" team. Think many have already known that it is = SDU/SWAT. They will be activated in major incidents which warrant their attention, e.g. hostage situation.
It is not easy to be selected as STAR member cos it encompasses not only physical but mental fitness.
Why SDU is so busy in HK? The number of major cases happening in HK is much more than Singapore. Shouldn't we be glad that we are living in a safe state? It seems that the number of bank robbery, kidnap,etc cases is high. Thus, SDU has to be activated. By the way, they are strictly on standby even if they are not on duty. So? Busy? No life? well .. that explains all.

haha trainin for star team member is tough man. u can even die while trainin n havin "games" with foreign country elites n basically there is no freedom when u ar a member from the star team
