in fact, there r diff stages when u can sign on - b4 enlistment, during bmt, or even after bmt, though tt might be abit late unless as u said, u successfully get to ocs urself.

if i were to sign on as an combat officer.. what will my working time like?.. do i have to stay in all week and book out only on wkends?
is it any difference from engineering/logistics officer? -

e.g. during ur pc tour, it will likely be stay in, whereas if u r on ur staff or even instructional tour, if there is nothing urgent u can stay out. however even during oc tour u may need to stay in cos of trg requirements, etc.
rule of thumb - first tour (usu pc tour) usu means staying in. after tt, it depends.
logistics - deals wif logistics. u noe, food, tpt, medical, ammo, etc.
engineering - there r diff kinds, such as field engineer, bridging engineer, pioneer (who receives engineering trg), demo, etc. -
actually i mean whether logistics and engineering officers have to stay in too? since their work is not so much like a combat officer..

i dunno much abt the log, but for the engr, if im not mistaken, they do haf the diff tours too like the other cbt arms. and the usual rule as mentioned in the earlier response applies to them too. -

or... the more likely vocation u r looking for might be the Intelligence Officer. its not widely publicised. its a tri-svc vocation.
as for getting a grant to read political science, saf has got several study awards. but wat u read is not determined by ur vocation. and not sure if political science is one of the fields they sponsor. -

Hey..came across this post..finally somewhere i can clarify saf stuff. I would like to be an an officer..but not sure where to head maybe some of you can help. I like intelligence work and also like to be a combat officer, is there anything that includes both? Is there a cross over between stuff position and command position? As in, manpower, intelligence, logistics are more of stuff positions while command position is more like incharge or various units.

Also...maybe somebody here can shed some light on the Joint Intelligence Directorate of g-2 and how they select people for intelligence work, how do they make sure they are up to the job? As in... intelligence analysts needs political knowledge and military know-how.

1. attend their roadshow. 28-29 feb at suntec.
2. visit www.mindef.gov.sg/arc
3. visit the saf recruitment centre at cmpb
4. wait till u enlist, and tell ur pc.
5. wait till u enlist and wait for their recruitment talks.
6. ask erijazz for advise.
there are several ways one can be involved in doing intel work
1. say u become an inf, gds, cdo officer. u can always indicate tt u wan to become a scout or recce officer. ur subsequent tours will most likely revolve around intel work den.
2. there is a vocation known as intel officer. this is a tri-svc vocation, meaning u r an intel officer, but u can be in the army, navy and airforce, and be trained in another vocation e.g. infantry, naval officer, etc. except tt ur subsequent tours will be alot more involved in intel.
all regular personnel go through several tours in their reg life: command tour, staff tour, instructional tour. so the ans is yes.
selection criteria is not known. but if u r a fresh regular, i suppose they look more at ur educational background and ur interview. if u r in svc and wish to go into tt line, its ur trg background and performance. You can be selected as an Int Officer in three ways.
1) Earmarked during your OCS cadet days (my experience).
2) Selected during your unit days by your CO.
3) Selected during ICT's by your CO.
G2 Mindef sends out a request for short list to CO's and that usually starts the selection process.
In all cases you must first attend School of Basic Military Inteliigence. If you are in fulltime NS it is about a 7 week course comprising classes, tests and field exercises including a field exercise overseas (in my day was Starlight). If you are reservist in ICT it is a short course with no overseas field trips. If you are in fulltime NS it is normal to be selected to attend Int school with less than 6 months to your ORD; i.e. normally only LTA's and above undergo this course. 90% of Int course candidates are regulars. Of the NSmen that attend Int course during fulltime NS or for that matter during ICT, virtually all are top 20% OCS graduates.
Int Officers at the battalion level are combat S2's. Reporting and attached to the CO, you also have responsibility to deploy and manage battalion Int resources including the scout platoon. You are expected to be a full combat soldier in addition to your battalion HQ responsibilties, and you carry FBO along with your Int equipment.
To advance to Division and Brigade level Int you have to attend the Advanced Military Int course, at which you are prepared for G2 responsibilities. Although a combat vocation, you will be less likely to see front line action than at the battalion level as you will typically be attached to div or brigade HQ, which is normally behind Battalion HQ's.
Basically combat Int officers have to have a sound field ability and be able to: recognise terrain and useage very well, plan, organize, recall and evaluate enemy tactics and armaments, and be able to navigate well as they are often relied upon by Battalion commanders to navigate to objectives by map and compass. The ability to conduct good ops orders is also a valued characteristic as Int officers conduct the Int portion for Battalion orders.
As with any vocation you are interested in, it helps to mention to your OC/CO that you have the interest and let them decide if they will put your name forward for evaluation and consideration. Int officers also undergo additional security clearances as you may often receive privilliged or secret information. -
