TS,
Don't worry about it, finish your degree and explore your career options for the time being. The Navy is not as fantastic as you think it is and it will be sad to see you waste your years in it only to leave it feeling jaded and without real work experience. Yes, being a naval officer may not be regarded as real work experience. If you really want to seek a career in the military, I highly recommend trying to be a pilot. At the very least, you still can find your way to be a pilot in the civilian aviation sector.
And if you ain't a scholar, your career becomes quite limited as well. So consider your options carefully and don't sign on the spur of the moment.
thank you for the insights into navy life. :]
and warnings too. hahaha, i really have a lot to consider and this thread really helped me.
Seeing the lonely M'sian flag on Middle Rocks and seeing dolphins bow-ride in the South China Sea, and glimpsing the Milky Way and the shooting stars at night is not something everyone can brag about.

Yeah I'll say the biggest draw is getting away from the fu`cking crowds.
Okay so after you spend 1 year watching the night skies, sunrise/sunset and watching the dolphins....then what? Excuse me but what are you gonna do after that? You can't just change jobs as you like, you know? Will your interests lasts forever? If its short-run, dun go for it....you may go ferry tours or Star Cruise to see the open seas and skies....no need to join Navy mah....
Consider your move carefully....dun regret later....
Don't get me wrong. I'm not selling the RSN or anything, but these were things I thought Starcruise would not be able to offer. Certainly being able to steer and execute rudder commands to a multi-million dollar ship, and then standing up to see dolphins bow-ride is not something cruise can offer.
Granted I've not been to Starcruise before....and after a 1 year tour I was back to being a civilian. In retrospect, I feel very lucky to have such a unique experience.
Of course there'll be all the standard SAF politicking and rank/appt-pulling nonsense. And IPPT.
And yes....if you are going to sign on, just think it through a little. But if you hear all the views and decide this is the best for you, I wish you bon voyage...
I have a Top Honours fren in the Navy and he say its worth it....His pay is 2x what he may get outside the Navy....if you dun have Top Honours, I think the career will be limited progression....do some homework and research before you decide....
I think govt and civil services jobs are the most stable....very rarely have retrenchments...people called it é“é¥ç¢— .....so you may wanna seriously join RSN...for a long term career....
actually, i do think i can change jobs as i like. every job is a commitment, but doesn't mean i have to commit all of my life to it. it doesn't hurt to try different things in life.
but it would definitely be a good line to be dedicated to, since you can keep moving up.
ahaha, there is definitely a draw in the solitude you get at sea, and being able to see things others never will.
How many years must you sign on ? What's the minimum ? Anybody knows?
around 5 years i would think.
