General Election 2010: Why NS?

  Hi Moderator, Why did you lock the topic on NS? I think this is a serious topic that concerns the welfare of most typical male Singaporeans and should not be ignored or shelved aside.Instead we should all come to reality and come to terms as to what is practical and sound. Doing NS for 1 year is not something unreasonable to ask. Perhaps a novel idea would be to have more than a longer reservist cycle to compensate for it. Reservist trainings are typical about 2 to 3 weeks. Perhaps there should be more reservist cyles but of a shorter duration of 1 week training per In-camp training. NS 1 year:- 2 months BMT, 2 months vocational training, 8 months attachment to units. Leave the command school training like SISPEC & OCS to the regulars who wish to sign on as a career. The whole objective is to train soldiers of various vocations to perform their roles, leave the commander's roles to the regulars. In this way for people who wish to make a living out of being in the regular uniformed organisations, can do so. My analogy of the most recent debate of slashing weightage of 2nd language for PSLE explains the vacillating & wishy-washy populist policy-makers, who cave in so easily for such issues. But NS affects many people & ideas raised up should not be put under the carpet and conveniently forgotten. Please post your views if you think having NS for 1 year is correct and that the policy should be implemented asap. Thank you.

  with the progressive shrinkage of the compulsory NS to even shorter terms...might as well do away with it altogether....1 week of reservist...really waste of time and resources and not sufficient for good training....might as well save it....

  There is a world summit or Asian military cooperation where each member country are to maintain a certain no. of head counts to sustain its military standing and in times of war, the member countries are to deploy the necessary military manpower (with proper training) to maintain world peace.

  In my opinion, NS is compulsory (and i dun give a damn who the govt is) for the preservation of one's country and that of world peace (and if we need help, same applies to other member countries for us)...the Japanese occupation tells us the need for a greater and stronger military (no matter how small we are) and we just dun know when we would need them....
