Basically I'm a PR serving NS, with a US passport. I've finished my BMT, and have been working for a couple of months, but I can't take it. It's not that it's hard, it's just I want to move back to the US.
I'm tired of Singapore [no offense, I lived here 11 years total, and don't have any friends outside of camp], and I want to start working for real, as well as studying part time.
Basically, I want to revoke my PR, but I'm not sure if the government will pester me about it, and cause me and my family trouble.
I'm not even doing a useful job, just the extra-guy; they didn't even approve my G50 application, so I feel less and less inclined to serve.
Any help would be appreciated.
Those who are liable to serve national service but refuse are charged under the Enlistment Act. If convicted, they face three years' imprisonment and a fine of S$10,000.
Controversy arose when the penalties were increased in January 2006 after Melvyn Tan, who was born in Singapore, received a fine for defaulting on his National Service obligations. Tan left for London to study music during his enlistment age and later acquired British nationality. In parliament, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean provided some illustration of the punishments defaulters would face:
Each year, a small number of people are convicted for their failure to enlist or refusal to be conscripted. Most of them were Jehovah's Witnesses, who are usually court-martialled and sentenced to three years' imprisonment, but they are usually held in a low-security detention facility and separated from other conscription offenders. The government does not consider conscientious objection to be a legal reason for refusal to serve NS.

He lived here for only 11 years, so he can't be a 2nd G PR.
TS, just bear with it. After you are through with NS, you are free to cancel your PR. If you were to AWOL now, you will never be able to come back to SG again. Oh, btw, you can't run now since you are already serving in the army.

My biggest problem is there are people waiting for me to get back... I
have nothing here... No friends, no family... I wish I never came here,
I didn't have a choice, and now I'm getting more and more anxious...
I went in positively, but after a long time, people all are all
pressuring me, telling me the same things, everyone, my superiors, my
fellow NSFs, even people like taxi drivers... All asking me why I'm serving, and all telling me I made a mistake...

just inform that you want to go back to US and give up your singapore PR.
I think US is not a bad place, depends on where you stay, but it is a fact that even for friend (US citizen) who is not that educated cannot find a proper perm job in his own country. Kind of sad, thanks to the influx of foreign workers.
Dont waste 2 years doing NS, it only waste time and money. But make sure you can find a job in US firsts. Times are hard in US now.

I have family ties, and lots of friends there too. Work won't be too hard to find, and I can actually begin a proper education...
I've been miserable here for the longest time...

You can't just revoke your PR while in the midst of serving.
If you choose to AWOL and you and your family leave this country, you will DEFINITELY suffer the consequences and your parents might be affected too.You will be in trouble for deserting and your parents might get into trouble for abetting a deserter...
What do you define as a useful job in NS?Being a commander? You are not the only one who thinks that what they did in NS was useless, plenty others have bemoaned about their vocation. The reason you gave is not a good one.Just be honest that you do not even want to do NS.
I have heard from my friends about a case of a china PR awoling and moving back to china with his family. On the day they decided to do it,they went to the Chinese embassy and gave a sob story to the officials to plead their case.In the end,the embassy book a flight for them and facilitated their way out SG.Naturally, after that, they should never expect to step back into SG again.
I cannot verify about what I heard but you can try going to your embassy to plead your case.Who knows they might even be able to bully Mindef into letting you off without a hitch?
I never said I wanted to do it. I stated I never had a choice. This country's been shoveling shit down my life the whole time.
At least at one point of time I felt I could contribute and do good in
my service, I did my best in BMT, and when I got posted I was taking
over a somewhat important job, but it required me to get clearance,
which they didn't grant because obviously I'm a foreigner, and would
spill all the secrets out to the world *rolls eyes*.
I don't even care that I wouldn't be able to come back to SG, I just
wish my mum would leave this hellhole, so I could leave and not have
any qualms at all.
I honestly don't care how much they label me here, the only reason why
I'm serving is to protect my mother, out of fear tactics the government
uses.
I'm honestly disappointed in the citizens of SG. No one bothers
to stand up for their democratic rights, everyone cowers under the iron
fist of the government. It's a facist country with a false sense of
democracy to lull it's people into believing they're free.
And before you go on saying I'm not bothering to stand up for
democracy, that's because I have no ties to this nation, and I'm in a
situation where they'd harass my family.
Honestly, it's complete bullshit, and it always will be. I'll finish my
two years service, but I swear, when I'm done, I'm writing a book
accounting everything I've learned about this place.

U can write whatever you want but if you write anything confidential, u can be sued by MINDEF for divulging anything about how it works and that will get u into more shit. Just serve and leave the country. Noone will miss not having u in SG since u are so unhappy here.

Whatever he has done is done and he has his reasons.
Do mind ur language n words.
Don't make me edit ur post.
dont know if yer book will sell..........most people only go for mission impossible....combat missions with almost no returns......hell hath no fury kinda military missions in world conflict hotspots.......they are not interested in james bond or young and restless story.......hmmm...but if u wrote a book bout an asian army thats been enslaved by space aliens with telepathic powers and bout how its all done...maybe that wuld sell...u couldfinally be rich......hmmmmm....juicy,,,
"[no offense, I lived here 11 years total, and don't have any friends outside of camp]"
If socially you can't cut it here in singapore, where there is no/fewer racial and cultural barriers to getting along, how do you think you'll fare in the far more diverse US?
this is the second LOL point... "Work won't be too hard to find"...10.2% unemployment polished numbers.
"I have family ties, and lots of friends there too"... i'm sure you're real close too... after living in different countries for 11 years...
hmmmmm.................u need advice on immigration for yer mom only.that is all u need.i dont see the difference between u and the other sporeans lookin at everything closely.in time u would prolly be like them too.
are u willing to die for your objective?how tough are you?everyone is just trying to perceive how strong u are by asking you questions....from cab drivers to yer neighbours.....
u need to be more stronger with a better plan....or ya mum gets stuck in spore eating katong laksa and lontong.
well.....u could get yer mom out first,,,,,with a us passport us state department allow parents of us citizens to rteside in the usa.and getting a lowly paid job in usa is actually much more than wat they pay an engineer in spore.they matter a hoot.just do it with as little loss as possible.
TS, why not u see this thread as well? more opinion known the better to make a decision.

It depends on which part of US you stay. US really have much opportunities than Singapore, which is really a small island. But many people like Singapore because of it weather, green and clean order. My friend is planning to work in beer factory in US? Making beer is his passion!
Actually it is up to you. if you give up your PR, why do you want to continue your NS? Just get on with your life. But don't AWOL, ask for approval (write to ICA and CMPB) and left. Good luck for your future.

The problem is that you are not allowed to run half way through your NS. If TS have not started it yet, that will be another story...
looks like he got himself into a big problem....an extremely big problem.he must have thought spore military were a bunch of pussies and he could just waltz in from america and make it big or something.
he overestimated himself.i dunno what americans would do.....probably be very harsh to themselves.
and which guy would wanna edit someone who is helping him???hmmm...maybe ya could go to mindef server and re-edit his name and everything as well...

If u consider direct insults help, i won't agree to it and will edit ur post as i see fit. If u want to offer advice, you can but if you wanna be rude and insult, i will edit the portions that i deem unrelated.
ok mal,
before u listen to someone close to u telling u to give yerself upto police or something.......i guess it wuld be ok cuz u have a us passport . buti dont think ya are tough enough ta survive the 2nd day even......so.......take out a really large piece of paper and think what ya would wanna do....if u have awol then its a irreversible kinda law.they wont hunt u down every minute like in the movies.they will only be alerted at all immigration checkpoints which is the usual practice.
i hope u changed yer name in the usa before stepping into spore...did u??if u did change yer name....theres no chance they can track ya.if not perhaps 50% chance.......

OT: U do know that immigrations these days do not just look at name but ur other details as well. I don't think just changing name alone would make you a different person and thus allowed to enter any country that u were ban from or have commited any offence in.
Note that the USA Passport card is not a biometric passport. The passport card does not follow the ICAO's Doc 9303, can only be used in a limited number of countries and uses a simple RFID chip instead of the contactless smart card technology that is used for biometric passports. Contactless smart card technology includes a microprocessor, data access control, communications security and other functionality as programmed.
