That is true.
It really depends on individuals persons. If the person has leadership skills, and the man follow, tekan is never needed. If the person is weak, he need to use rank to suppress his men then he is a failure.
I still remember 3SG Ang Wee Meng, 2SG Yeo Li Xian my BMT specs. Turn to dust also I can remember. I meet Wee Meng later in the Uni, and I still greet him. And I still own him 200 push up till now!!?? LOL. I still remember the SG major in PT kit coming to our bunk to fix the lamp silently. But we respect him, from then on we follow his instructions. It is about the little things that he do. Very minor, but worth a person respect.
I still see my unit specs around in gym. We greet each other and there is communication. And every reservist training, we will come back and meet the regulars here now and then.
Tekan is tool used for failed specs and officer.
My SG always use book out early, night off, canteen break, off and ... to drive the man. More effective than tekan.
There is a time when the officer even treat us with Pizza, celebrate my birthday when they really tekan me on that day.
