Would fellow singaporeans please help out. Any advise is great.
I am a singapore who ran to USA to study. Now that I have graduated I am thinking of returning home. I call CMPB and talked to a Major. He asked me to return home and all i will get is a fine probably no jail. Anyone with experiences ?
Thanks bros
dont think so.
the letter they sent to you states:
either 3 years jail or $10000 fine or BOTH
im a defaulter btw. so yes. dont return unless you want to take that risk.
talk to the major cannot confirm, you must consult mindef and the sg law to be 100% certain.
and imo.. i think you might still need to serve NS if u return. (not sure abt this)
do note also there will be many levels of charges..
1. exit permit? did you furnish the $75000?
2. deferment for further studies
3. not returning= fine/jail/both
mindef can charge you for many things. so just take those into consideration.
also ..
whats your age? if you're below 21 (i think).. they can hold your parents liable as well.
Those who are liable to serve national service but refuse are charged under the Enlistment Act. If convicted, they face three years' imprisonment and a fine of S$10,000.
Controversy arose when the penalties were increased in January 2006 after Melvyn Tan, who was born in Singapore, received a fine for defaulting on his National Service obligations. Tan left for London to study music during his enlistment age and later acquired British nationality. In parliament, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean provided some illustration of the punishments defaulters would face:
Each year, a small number of people are convicted for their failure to enlist or refusal to be conscripted. Most of them were Jehovah's Witnesses, who are usually court-martialled and sentenced to three years' imprisonment, but they are usually held in a low-security detention facility and separated from other conscription offenders. The government does not consider conscientious objection to be a legal reason for refusal to serve NS.
ya.. what limpper says is right..
cause mindef sent me a letter demanding that i return by a certain June, but i cannot return cos of exams. Then it states that if i dont return, ill be liable for jail/fine/both.
Then past the date already, they still ask to pay for the bond and they now say, that i have until october. Now wtf??
dodgy right?
and im certain that mindef will NOT let you off the hook of 2 years of hard labour, with just a $10000 fine.
Im sure they got brains as well.
consider wisely.

so where are you now? you dun intend to return to spore forever?
running away is a coward way, if you talk nicely to mindef...most likely you get away with it. The most it's just a fine, i know my reservist's friend cousin also surrender to Mindef, he got handcuffed but then after taking some statements, they releases him and don't think he even paid fine for it, but he did have to serve his NS as well. Running away will not solve the problem, you never be able to come back to Singapore throughout your life, don't tell me you do next time in your work, you no need to travel to this part of the world. anyway nowadays NS is so easy and the pay is not so lousy like before.
NS was fun for me but on hindsight, what a waste of my time.

haha no choice what, cheap labour. you really depend on those regulars to protect us lol if not for NS. most of the dirty work is done by NS guys. those regulars only know how to command and bark at us only.

yes. running away or committing suicide is coward, as it does not solve the problem. MINDEF people are also humans, they also dun want to see your future ruined and your degree go to waste.

well i wouldnt say that the regulars are all like that but definitely there were some idiots sitting on their fat pay and zuo bo lan or smoke bomb very frequently.
why dun u consider signing on lol. do nothing in camp and wait to knock off at 5pm.=
to ivan:
talking to a major is pointless....he could be your major screw you up. May i suggest that you get the confirmation from mindef in black and white before you return.

why would they ask u to pay for the bond when u are already abroad for so long? the deposit should be put down before u leave.
u should have contacted them when they first told u to return in June, to say u have exams. The idea is to keep them in the loop. Cos guys who MEAN to default, they do not respond, yeah thats what they do.

Since this MAJ is posted to CMPB, then odds are he's one of the cannot make it. Only losers get sent to rot in places like CMPB, SAFTI, BMTC, etc.

put bond is because they rather trust the cash than you. if you default, they can forfeit the cash.
those officers in MINDEF and CMPB are also humans lar. talk to them and ask them what are the penalties if you return.

please do not generalise. the above statement is not only far from true for some in the SAF, (that includes both officers and specialists), the ambitious/dedicated ones work much longer hours than anyone in the private sector.
there are tons of slackers, losers and slobs in the private sector as well. afterall so many of those farmer local grads end up there haha. if you dunno that, its clear you haven't started work for a day.

obviously lah duh. u mean can trust you? would you react the same exact way if not a cent was put down and u are overseas?? duh. why u sound so surprised or emotional..as if u think they should trust ur heart..emo sia.
