Hi guys. I've always wanted to join the Army. I've been surfing the web for more information and i'm quite confused with some of the things.
1. After my NS and i've studied all i wanted to and i want to join the army, do i need to go through some extremely vigorous tests to get in?
2. What are some of the requirements to join the Commandos? Also, i've heard that you cant be a commando if you're the only son (i have one older sister) is it true?
3. More info about our special forces?
I would like to know most about my first query about joining the army. Thanks guys!
Signing on as a regular doesn't require you to go through extremely vigorous tests. The vigorous part would be while you're serving, depending on a number of factors.
Read the CDO FAQ stickied at the top of this forum. All your answers are there.
Take things slowly. I assume you're born in 1995. You still have a few years to go before enlisting, and you'll learn, mature and change your thinking a hell of a lot in that time.
please go thru the compulsory NS full-time BMT 1st b4 even sign on the dotted line of the contract... to feel the basic experience of a soldier...
if u just sign b4 enlistment, its the same as saying a restaurant serve very good food but u even haven't taste and eat a meal from there yet...
cos different pple different taste...

Why will you want to make one big round?? You might as well sign on during your NS and take up SAF scholarships to study in the unis...

1. After my NS and i've studied all i wanted to and i want to join the army, do i need to go through some extremely vigorous tests to get in? Not really for most vocations except medial check up
2. What are some of the requirements to join the Commandos? Except for no medical history, physically fit & good eyesight, u need to clear a physical assessment test.
Also, i've heard that you cant be a commando if you're the only son (i have one older sister) is it true? Is a myth.
3. More info about our special forces? U seems to be signing on to taste excitement & glory. U better find out more about the job & think twice. The more glorious is the job, the higher price u have to pay.
I would like to know most about my first query about joining the army. Thanks guys!
A sentence for you.
"There's a reason why regular service don't count as work experience."
You have to be an Officer from BMT to get a chance in future as a commando.
Hii TS, if you really wish to sign on i will say sign on during your unit life and not BMT life
reason 1 : BMT your are recuit life is alot different from unit . you won't get F till very serious unless you really did something quite bad enough
reason 2 : no matter where you wanna sign on you will have to pass your IPPT , and for your info Pes C2 and C9 are not allow to sign on..
and pros for sign on
better starting pay then outside ?
5 years or 10 years ricebowl ?
cons for signn on
whenever you promo your pay only incress by abit
if they dont wanna renew your contact you will be someone with out any working exp
sorrie for my bad english

1a. I think you are confused. "After your NS??". You can sign on at age 16, and opt of the study scheme, sort of the military school in Singapore. They will trained you for O level then ITE, then soldier. If you are super smart, opt of SAF oversea/local scholarship after A level, they pay you for study in Uni and then you come back to serve. You can skip NS, as you are already a SAF personnel. There is also poly scheme...
1b. You need to be medical/mentally fit to sign on.
2. You can always opt to join the commando. It is up to them to see if they like your face and see if you can take the training and lucky enough not to get injured.
3. Special Operation Task Forces? humm they just change their boss. Unknown if they are going the change their policy, Previously SOTF recruitment is done through internally. This is what they do. http://www.mindef.gov.sg/imindef/publications/cyberpioneer/news/2009/July/15jul09_news.html
4. Requirement to sign on commando footman --> A level only
Oh Yes. Why I dont want to sign on? When half of my family members are military regulars.
Well, only realised that I don't listen to command, during my BMT. LOL. So I am not be trained.

If you need the money, the military is one option.
Otherwise, however, i urge you not to decide until you've gone through BMT. You need some idea of what you're getting into.
Some ppl do find that the SAF is for them. If so, good for them.
But others just want to finish their duty and get on with life.
Still, it's good to know that you are considering your options early. =)
even going through bmt wont be enough because the life of a recruit and others is totally different especially for regulars.
I actually asked this question once to my CSM , kinda bo liao but I was really bored that day. I asked him if did he signed on for country? He said "Lan jiao! Sign on for moneyyyy!"

U will prob get LSA which is given out to any one who applies to sign on and do degree. Do not go to a famous dumping ground of JC students, NTU and especially engineering. Anyone who can end up there is epic phailure.
in JC everyone knows no matter how badk you are you can always go to NTU engineering. This is caused by a combination of its worst entry requirements among all courses and how it takes in the largest number of people. Lowest criteria and biggest take in number. Everyone knows it's where all the rubbish is stored. Ppl who say that that is personal attack is in denial becuz they are alma mater of that dumping ground. Nothing that is true can be 'personal' attack. When its fact, it can't be personal. Anyone from a normal to decent JC would rather die than end up there.
You can refer to salary.sg as well, where NTU engin is reported on paper to be the worst (#1 spot) among all the dumping grounds hahaha. The dumping grounds of the local Us.
http://www.salary.sg
The Dumping Grounds by Employability
1. NTU Environmental Engineering - 77.0%
2. NTU Biological Sciences (Honours) - 77.9%
3. NUS Science - 78.3%
4. NUS Environmental Engineering - 79.3%
5. NUS Arts (Honours) - 79.8%
6. NUS Applied Science (Honours) - 80.0%
7. SMU Social Sciences (cum laude and above) - 80.0%
8. NTU Materials Engineering - 80.7%
9. NUS Chemical Engineering - 82.0%
10. NTU Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering - 83.0%
Mod: It is possible to make your point without resorting to vulgarities. And no, swearing does not further your point if you wish to have it seen as a cogent argument.
Ans: Shit - for this issue, it means NTU and most of the other local courses - is not a vulgarity. I thought sgforum is the only forum in sg that does not clamp down on freedom of the use of the word shit. Its just the thing you pass out from your anus. It is a natural bodily process that God designed. if u dun shit, you will get cancer and die.

A person success does not depend on which school or what course he is. It depends on his luck and fortune.
Hello!
My friend is working as a computer enginer with $4.5K/month going to $5K next year. Another Bioengineer is not the vice-CEO of a construnction company (he born with silver spoon). Another Bioengineer also earning about $4K now.
NTU Accountant only started out as $2.2K.
My NUS lawyer earning like $3.5K but work like mad.
Even my classmate who is now a doctor is only earning $ 2 plus K as a start.
Several of my EEE friends are now in the bank, one $2.2K (executive), and other $4.5K (management trainee)
I dont think NTU engineering is so called the dumping ground.
I dont understand why you make such a weird post.
hmm... i also want to join SAF leh, though im only 15 this year... still got a long way to go. Want to join mainly cuz of passion, not for money, want to serve singapore.

Everyone who has ever gone to JC knows this. I don't understand why you are the only one in the universe dreaming that no one else knows. NTU engin has the lowest cut-off point and the highest intake in all courses in local U, in fact it makes up 80-90% of the whole of NTU body. When people say they are desperate and don't know what to do, people will console them by saying its ok you can always end up in NTU.
its true that nus law starts at $3.5k only, accountancy only $2k, all the business courses also $2K only. the low pay of other courses doesn't mean NTU engin is not a dumping ground course. for them is low pay but can find job. But NTU engin is cannot find job. u can refer to salary.sg employability figures, which are figures given by the universities to the media on the % of its jobless graduates.
Is your "management trainee" friend is "fresh grad" ah? I know the pay of bank management trainee from local U. the pay is $2.2 - $2.3k only for honours. and that was during boom year (2007). Bluff chewren...now can find job must steal laughter already.. your $4K+ earning friends, is how old? I am talking about young grads. Even a moron can earn $4K at old age and I assure you I know many who do in their old age (30s, 40, 50s) including the morons from NTU engin. If you need to name someone from NTU engin whose eventual income (logically at a pretty mature age) is $4K just to make it sound 'good', i'm afraid it has the opposite effect. $4k for eventual ceiling pay oh my god..such a degree is worse than toilet paper. If I had an NTU engin degree I'd use it to wipe my ass after diarrhea.
Your words are full of contradictions. If a person's success is not dependent on the school/course he went to, how come you can so certainly tell me the low pay of each of those friends of yours?
The fact that you want to tell me this course earns how much and that course earns how much, is predicated on set beliefs and principles of income linked to background. If it was a chaos theory like you claimed, then you yourself won't have moral authority to tell me your observations of your friends, since it's all chaotic.
