I'm sure you know by now that the compulsory 2-year NS system for men is important as Singapore needs a defence force to sustain survival. This is due to its small size and its surroundings.
But I just want to gather feedbacks about the nasty happenings in your NS. Over these 4 decades, with many evil things happening around, don't you think that it can be a very political issue?
You see. My dad told me that in the 70s, when NS was still young, during BMT, some recruits would be given nicknames by their sergeants. The nicks are even more severe than 'blur king'. Suicides were committed as a result.
Not only this, many were rumored to have died during trainings and this would go unpublicised and unpublished. It was only recently that about 10 years ago, deaths from dunking incidents for example started surfacing in the press.
Now, do you think that if Singapore were to be as democratic as HK, Japan and South Korea, people would have gone to Hong Lim Park to stage demonstrations and protests regarding the harsh and sometimes unreasonable and abusive authority.
If the majority are really so riled up over NS, would it still happen in this "democratic" society?
Now think. How democratic is democratic?
What's so fun about demonstrations and protests?
What's so unreasonable and abusive?
Is NS really that tough?
Many evil things?
Sad.
Because I enjoyed my NS. It was a great experience.

Firstly, people are still given nicknames now. It might not be as bad as before. it still exists. I have been labelled with 101 nick names and i am still well and alive.
Since training deaths are now open than before, what are you afraid of? The regulars training you are even more afraid of their ricebowl than u dying. While accidents still do occur, i am pretty sure that a reasonable amt of safety measures have been taken.
If not, there are proper channels to seek, although the effectiveness is still greatly debated ...

Sometimes, I really wonder if our troops are so soft as to become depressed over what is essentially parade-ground nicknaming.. something which every military in the world has.
Our boot camp is tough? Wait till you check out the USMC's boot camp at Parris Island
Politically speaking, there's really nothing much anyone can say against this system, because liberal or conservative, we've realised that NS is still a neccessary evil..
come on..
singapore are breeding educated cowards.

sad but i agree..
NS indeed makes one wake up your idea..whether you like it or not.
Ha! You think when you were in school, your teachers never gave you nicknames?
Whether it was 70s or now is no different, people still die everyday, whether they want to or not.
Democratic? You want democratic, singapore is not for you.
i don't even know where to begin....
what don't kill you make you stronger....so grow up....stop complaining.

=)
agreed again
dare82..... you're 27 years old this year? You've done your NS already?
'Harsh and sometimes unreasonable and abusive authority'? I've been through NS, and I may describe it as all sorts of things, but those words are not the ones that come to mind.
You call NS in Singapore harsh and abusive? I've heard far worse stories in the Russian Army where instructors have been known to drop-kick recruits right in the stomach.
Anyway, to survive... no... the system here served as a warning. Like people want to kill a dog for it's meat, it would bite back... but it ultimately would not survive... just like the system in sg...
Anyway, NS is here to stay no matter how we complaint... riots? demonstration? you need to apply for a permit for such thing.... think back... who are the ones who kept on signing the guest books of the prison... Even a silent demostration of less than 5 people kenna arrest... what do you think?
Yeah the system is made up this way.
With a purpose to withstand any possible POW treatment from top to bottom.
That's why fault-finding may be necessary sometimes.
You know whole lot knock it down.

I have to agree with fudgester...our NS here is already very relax liao..comparing to Israel and Taiwan. No change parade, no this no that..... Actually during the early days of our NS they were tough cos Israelis train us...anyway what's wrong with giving nicknames in NS...in schools you are given nicknames by your friends as well. In return, I'm sure many of us give the PS, PC, CSM nicks as well.
As for democratic.....it depends on how u looked at it, like HK and Korea so good meh? btw TS, u said it yourself, in the past all these death cases were not published but now all these are published doesn't it so it's more democratic now?
I don't get it why people don't want to serve NS and find it sian and stuffs, normally only those wussy type people say that. Others that I have meant, say they just want to get done and over with.
You're serving your country, whine what?
I have no qualms to serve my country even for an extra year more but what I can't take it while we're serving inside, our potential jobs are being taken up by cheaper foreign labours. I'm sure if the government makes it fair for males to join NS. They would get batches of enthusiatic recruits.

Now... you started to whine too...
NS death is peanuts compared to the numbers of death from reckless driving, drunk driving, lovers tiff, robberies and murders.
What else do you want?
Dying during NS is way honourable then dying to some stupid accidents or lover tiff gone awry.
Wow! This is really a very very sensitive topic that someone must change the title.
topic gets edited everyday...
how do i say this in a nice way...
I think the nicest way is by giving nick names... Swah Ku Kia.
If you got to serve, then go and serve it.
I have no idea about hongkong or Japan but you better be glad that you are not in Korea. Training is super tough because North Korea would be harassing their borders every now and then. You life is in constant danger. If not why do you think so many actors tried to avoid army.
You should be happy because Singapore army is constantly upgrading to provide a better environment for you. Army life gets easier with good food, beds, and enough time for sleep. SO be glad

I did not change your title, perhaps the other Mods did.
Anyway, the more you travel in a certain path, you begin to see why certain issues are sensitive.
maybe because Singaporean grew up in peace and disconnected with the past conflict while the current conflict seem far. while SAF oversea deploy are limited in directly involved in combat role. But Training is to save lives....
perharps this would remind young and old audiences.
The Commission administers, operates, and maintains 24 permanent American burial grounds on foreign soil. Prob LKY agreed with the harsh treatment at first due to his experience in the Japanese.
Fault-findings are sometimes done to make us survive in any POW during wartime.
u still don't get it.......
