Unless proven by a medical professional in black and white written on your medical certificate, you have no choice but to go swimming.

Don't worry, there will be lifeguards to look after you.
When you enter BMT, there will be a CAT test for you, and after you have been put into CAT C ( Which you probably will be, since you do not know how to swim at all ), you will be made to go for swimming lessons where there will be PTIs teaching you swimming.
Before you enter the water, be sure to tell the lifeguards that you are a non-swimmer, though usually they will make you wear a swimming cap before you enter the water.
Look on the bright side, while your platoon mates are doing 'sai-kang', you will be swimming and having fun in the pool.
Once you pass out of BMT, you might be sent to units where you will be required to swim with an inflated life-jacket as part of their training. In this case, there is even less to worry about.
If you enter sispec/OCS though, they might require you to go for aqua- jogging sessions at time with the Aqua Belt, just relax and run in the water and you should do fine.
In any case, if there is any questions you want to ask about on water safety and such, you are free to post them here and ask me.

During my time, it was admin time for everyone when swimming lessons were conducted so there is no sai kang to be done as most of the specs are all at the pool so its not really such a good thing.
The pass requirement is just 50m (1 lap) breaststroke (frog style).
swimming and having fun in the pool?
last time, the swimmers got wet and they haven't even stepped into the pool yet
RSN swimming test a wee-bit more difficult than this.
Pray hard you dont get that if you are really that afraid of water.
Heck, just enjoy BMT lar...it is a really memorable experience for most.
No more mass hammering by PTI before swim lesson? Last time i barely just worn my swimming trunks and we have to do push ups and flutter kicks. And this is in BMTC not Sembawang Camp. Thank god i've passed my test in 3 lessons!

It is also partially dependent on which company you get post to. If you got posted to a slack company, and that bunch of specs during that time is bor-chap one, then you will get to sleep in the bunk while the divers go for their swimming lessons.
If you get posted to some company like ninja, and the batch of specs are very sadistic ones, then while your buddies are enjoying swimming lessons, you will be "enjoying" something else.

It depends on the PTI you got. I have seen sadistic PTIs making recruits run around the pool 10 rounds before asking them to get in. I have also seen slack PTIs who ask the spec to do warm-up for his recruits, and then ask them to shower and go into the water when they are ready.
Relax and learn to be comfortable in the water. If Mas Selamat can do it so can you!!
my time in tekong in 07, the PTIs were very understanding towards those who couldn't swim cos they didn't want any casualties perhaps.. even took time out to slowly guide them during their lessons.

nice ma
btw, which PTIs [in tekong] are better? sch 1 or sch 2? =x seems to me that those from sch 1 seem to be relatively welfare, although the one in charge of bronco seems to be kena 'hammered' [as in jeering] often by the last batch of recruits from what i heard... lol
actually I think depends on your coy, I remembered last time during one of the my swimming lesson years back, my normal PTI was not around and the stand in PTI actually want us to do more than usual warm up, one of our PCs stopped him.
well, sometimes when the pti tells us that he is not able to conduct our soc/swimming, he would tell us that we cant expect much from the stand-in pti lol. but fortunately the stand-ins can adapt pretty fast to the style that my coy guys wanted =p
my one lagi better those who cant swim only attended 1 lesson of water games and after that was so busy with other shedule ended up throughout our bmt those who cant swim only get a 45 mins water games lesson

If you really don't want to swim in BMT, you can see the psychiatrist at CMPB and tell him of your water phobia.
