Spiralled down and found unconscious? What? Did his chute deploy?
think i seen him before back in service..very decorated WO..
RIP encik..
another death of a warrant.
RIP.
MINDEF just announce they will increase the retirement age of regulars and this poor old soldier jump to his death...
THE Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is enhancing its career schemes for officers and regulars, which will see the retirement age of officers raised to 50, in a move to enhance their career and retain talent.
For regulars, there will be the MDES, with a retirement age of 60. The aim is to nurture a group of personnel who have deep professional expertise in key military domains, such as engineering and intelligence.
Why does the Commandos need a 53 year old soldier to jump?

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said First Warrant Officer (1WO) Tan Poh Eng was part of a six-man team that jumped off a Republic of Singapore Air Force C-130 aircraft at a height of 12500 feet to conduct a formation jump.
When the formation broke off at 3500 feet to deploy their parachutes, 1WO Tan, 53, spiralled downwards to the ground.
He was found unconscious at about 4.45pm (Singapore time), and given immediate medical attention by an SAF doctor and a medic on-site.
1WO Tan was heli-evacuated at 5.15pm and arrived at about 5.35pm at the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.
The parachute jump instructor from the Commando Training Institute was pronounced dead at 5.57pm in the hospital.
Mindef and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late 1WO Tan and is investigating the incident. All SAF freefall training has been temporarily suspended.

Parachute Malfunction? Both chutes?
RIP

My salutes to you, Sir.
He opt for the jump himself? I personally don't think SAF wold let a 50+ yr old personel to take the jump.
If he opt for the jump its gotto be partially his fault for being complacent, he is not young as before so he shouldn't take the risk.
Though there are other points which leads to this accident.
Mod's Note: Leave your disrespectful opinions at the door.
RIP

It's not about need. A lot of our senior guys just keep jumping. The man went out doing what he loved. RIP.
I just worked out who he was - I only knew him by his nickname at PTW.

In a freefall, if the chute refuses to deploy properly, the freefaller will be sent spiraling down the sky due to the pre matured deployment of the faulty chute.
Centrifugal force coupled with terminal velocity will spin the blood and bodily fluids into the ends of the body (head and toes).. causing extreme G force on the brain and paralysis of the body.
In 10 seconds, even an experienced freefaller can get knocked out cold if he/she doesnt eject the faulty chute to end the spiral and to deloy his/her second chute.
Free falling is more risky as compared to normal static line jumps.
My condolences...
*salute*
Mods, any chance of deleting the troll's post ASAP before he pisses too many people off?

Looking at this case, his death cause might be due to a sudden surge in Blood Pressure.
His parachute definitely opened up, otherwise he will have become Rojak, and there will be no need to send him to hospital.
It could be ( or rather, probably ) that there is something wrong with the parachute which caused him to spiral downwards, and in this kind of situation, no matter how young or old the person is, there is quite some chance that some of your blood capillaries will burst due to the pressure, and you will end up R.I.P.
My condolences to Encik Tan.

Too bad you are not the one taking the jump.
Thats why Singaporeans would never been happier with people like you around.
It is rare to see 2 chutes fail.... RIP
Furthermore, i suppose he cleared his FFI and other medical tests b4 allowed to go, at this age ...
