Hi guys, anyone have any idea what the SAR interview is all about? During RO the other day myself and a few other guys from my company (notably, I realized that we had all rejected command school) got called up for the SAR interview. I'm pretty intrigued as to what the interview is for, and was interested to see if anyone has any more information about it? I would be pretty excited if that would point to us being earmarked for operating tanks, but at the same time worried that it could be leading to armored recce or infantry troopers. If it helps we enlisted on the 9th of Jan this year into the enhanced leadership batch and pop on the 11th of march. Any and all information would be appreciated!
What's there to interview?
"Do you enjoy the smell of diesel exhaust, mud, and dust flying in your face?"
Ha. Yeah I'm honestly hoping I get to be the guy IN the tank, not the bugger running behind it. I know tank cleaning/servicing will be terrible, but I'm sure during training itself it'll be alot more fun to be sitting inside the tank.
I think u meant the M113. Only 2 people gets to sit in the M113 permanently. The driver and the commander. The rest are armour infantry. Meaning u are the same as normal infantry units except u carry a carbine instead of the full length m16. U get to sit in the m113 during some missions to cut the walking to the objective.
The Steel Within? You better hope that you are not selected. Inside or outside the M113 is not fun at all.
Damn. That doesn't sound good.

Nobody runs behind it. Its a long time misconception of armoured infantry. Training is usually to dismount and charge forward. Yes, its a lot more fun, considering armoured infantry also do infantry roles, which includes long walks.
AI does run alongside their vehicles though. Particularly in urban setup.

Basically, nothing in SAF sounds good.

it doesnt sounds good in the moment, but after a few years, thinning hair and a pot belly you might miss being 19 again and doing the crazy shite...
TS, you must be aiming to be part of a crew for the Leopard tanks right?
this one even if u reject u also will kena..and armour sucks..
SAR? weird because normally interviews are conducted by vocation like recce trooper,MP all that but my best guess would be recce, oops correction for battalions its called Scouts. so prolly going for scout interview haha

AI section used to dismount and move behind the M113 when they are close to the enemy objective ... till beyond penetration, the section will form up and carry out fire and movement ...
This movement has been phased out in the late 80s ... during my AISL, our instructors did conduct this movement ... it is really siong, esp. got to samula .... then I knew why the old timers said AI trooper got to "run behind vehicle" ...

Tankees need not dismount during any exercise ... I think this is the best part of tankee ... however, due to lack of manpower, the maintenance is the most tough esp if you are using the old SM1 as a tank consists of only 3 crew members. If you are the gunner/driver of the PC/PS vehicle, lagi jia-lat as normally after ex. they will have less or even no time to assist in servicing the tank when it returns back to camp. They need to go for de-briefs, send ammo and other types of planning activities. FYI, our SM1 have a common tendency of throwing tracks while on the move when going over some uneven terrain. M113 are more durable.
During my active time, when the tanks are deploy as fire base during deliberate attack (usually for at least 4-5 hours before the whole company re-org), they normally engine off and start to party like cooking instant noodles, hot-dog on butter spread bread etc ... occasionally, they will report some sit-rep so as to make the OC and the rest of the company think they are on alert but in actualy fact, they are holding snack on his left hand while switching his CVC transmission on the air using his right ...
Hi TS, I think you should opt for it since it is once in a lifetime even thought I not from armour.
