Out of curiosity, can anyone who is not weapon trained (eg a recruit who OOC from BMT) carry arms in bases or outfield? Is it an illegal offense assuming commanders have given approval?
nope.

u must pass technical handling 1st b4 going to rifle range.
e.g. strip/assemble, weapon maintenance and cleaning.
if guard duty, sound off to take the replacement of baton and rattan shield.
I am still a rec and I am supposed to go outfield in support role. I need to carry arms. Is it legal? I dont want to be charged for it haha if it is an offence.

SAF soldier by law is authorized to be issued arms.

No la...I dont mind gg. Or not must clear leave sianz.
Just a bit confused cos my pc (a capt) says recruits not allowed to go outfield/carry arms but no choice due to manpower issue lol.
But since its legal, no worries haha. My first outfield....very exciting. And erm beach road sell id tags (dog tags) right?
i see so many recruit go outfield with rifle...
Your pc means that the SOP is best don't do it, but is actually allowed.
similarly a soldier can FBO all the time during training, but SOP suggest you don't do it.

bro...you're suppose to carry your rifle with you at ALL TIMES in outfield...cannot leave it out of your sight...at least tat's for my field camp that i just finished...
u must pass technical handling before u can carry arms.
yeah.. u cant carry or use arms without passing bmt's technical handling.. by right it's illegal.. but army sometime works by left one, and since captain say liao.. then who cares go shoot some birds!!
the doctrine for SAF say you must pass technical handling in order to carry arms. the same doctrine also say the army cannot use vulgarity in the army.
By singapore law, it is not illegal. http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/non_version/cgi-bin/cgi_legdisp.pl?actno=2003-REVED-13&date=20080815&method=whole&doctitle=

How come your BMT PC is a CPT?
Anyway, while the law says it is not illegal, it is SAF's practice not to allow non-weapon trained personnel to carry arms with live rounds.
Basically, the order goes like this,
1) practice and pass technical handling tests.
2) passing technical handling test allows you to go for a live range.
3) Firing a single live round in a live range after having passed the technical handling test constitute your ability to use that weapon.
4) you are allowed to perform duty that involves possession of live rounds (eg Guard duty)
However, carrying of rifles without having passed handling test is not an offence so long you are permitted to do so.
In recent years, some Camps have prohibited guard duty personnel from doing sentry with a baton/wicker shield. This usually apply to more sensitive camps.
Actually arms handling is not that hard.
yup, can be learned in 30 minutes.
since his question is carrying arms around, and not about firing live rounds, the answer is simple... yes, you can carry arms.
Ts sian already.
HAHAHA
