Below are a few lessons that i've learnt through experiencing such problems.
Ways to save the Miserable $400/- (Based on a Recruit/Private's Salary)
1) Don't Be Tempted Into Subscriping any form of Magazines' offers during BMT
2) Don't Buy Any Insurance which are offered inside the SAF. (NTUC, AVIVA, SAF Welfare Insurance)
3) Best option is to stay in
4) Indent and consume all meals if possible.
5) If you're sick, go to the A&E Dept of each hospital (If your unit which you're posted to aren't general with MCs.)
[For Tekong, just go visit MO once your excuse status runs out; Only for those who want to keng all the way]
6) Don't go for canteen breaks [Especially people in different camps]
This has burnt quite a considerable amount of my salary.
7) Quit Smoking (If you're attached and want to save money to go traveling with your gf)
8) if you can't quit, cut down on smoking (Example: Share 1 stick among your friends and take turns; Don't give sticks out to your fellow smoking buddies)
9) Read books which are borrowed from Libraries, don't buy newspapers nor books. (Small fractions of money also counts)
10) Find out who drives in your camp, and try to catch a lift back to the area nearest to you to save up on your transportation bills.
One thing that I did to spike my camp mates which everyone dulan him cos he's sha ka... was forgotten but was told by my ex camp mate when we went out the other time.
I was at the smoking point smoking and that sha ka guy asked me for cig, I rejected him and say not enough... he lan lan... then I finished the stick... sit for a while more, take out another stick and start puffing... he questioned me, I replied... "Not enough for me to puff until happy"
if he ask you for a stick..
try this "name a price for 1 stick"
it'll piss him off..

last time i oso got a bunk mate who always ask ppl for cig.. until one day we got so fed up tat we insert a matchstick into the cig beforehand n pass it to him..
u should c his farking face when he was puffing halfway n the cig lighted up!
lol the books and canteen breaks quite true
all the money wasted on FHM and newpaper. ARGH!!!!
but my salary $1000. so ok la
I buy the insurance to not let anything happen to me.
agreed... i think insurance is okie.. aviva quite cheap too...
books can go library to borrow, no need to buy all those magazines.....
i think night's out are a killer..... go out arcade, drink, play pool, shopping, makan.. take taxi back..... wow.. haha... sure spent money like siao. But it was worth it, cause staying in camp was a pain...muz go out walk walk to regain sanity! HA!
Also learn to use company line's phone instead of your own Hp =P
Make use of the camp gym too.... get fit!
Canteen, mess must try to avoid... food is catered for you ma.... no matter how sucky SFI might be
One good way to save money might be to either automatically save a portion of your allowance on the 10th, or to invest in some savings scheme offered by insurance firms.. but that one requires some research to see if it's worthwhile

I wouldn't buy insurance if I were you.
After knowing that the insurance company will try means and ways to avoid paying compensation as stated in the clause.
I tried cancelling the insurance plan but was told only in the email that the SAF Welfare Insurance has a 12month compulsary term.
Thus I'm stuck with it, if wanna cancel have to forfeit 3 months of insurance payment.
Trust me, if you go back straight home after NS, take public transports, there's no need to buy insurance until you have some family liability and faniancial liability then it's when we need to get those stuffs under insurance, else it will be a waste of salary.
No la, its just that i find, normally people with insurance nothing happen to them. But rather those really suay one normally don't have. So its just pay to keep yourself safe loh.
For those people who like to save.
You can consider going to POSB and open a Savings Account.
Since the interest is higher than the normal account.
You guys should go there and ask for more details.
Consider moonlighting once my hair grows back from BMT. Yah, other misc stuffs would be selling cigs to fellow smokers.. selling it at 50cents/stk, which means u can earn alot from one pack. =)

Interest rate isn't that important, most importantly I know I have set aside an steady amount of cash each month before I spend away those within my reach.
Originally posted by cyborgboy:lol, actually instead of focusing on saving,y nt concentrate on earning more by moonlighting?
I am curious though...any other ways to earn money other than buying guard duty frm ur fren n giving tuition n MLM?
Don't do MLM, else you will end up coughing more money out rather than earning it unless you don't need to pay a SINGLE CENT {maintainence included}
If you can find such a company, chances are it's not the quality company you should be in. Chances of dropping out of MLM are extremely high during NS period for stay in personnel.
Giving tution can, just don't get caught.
Offer to help others polish boots if yours are bright enough to make them be happy with your standard.
Help them buy breakfast and be the deliveryman (chances are you will be outcast if you ask them for this service charge)
Be a bunk cleaner by yourself and offer to help the whole unit and collecting some service charge lor.
So how much is the rate for buying/selling of duties nowadays??

1% by itself is already higher than the normal 0.025% per year.
Did I mention that the savings account by posb is compounded on a MONTHLY BASIS thus the compunded interest will definitly be much higher if you save more each month.
Refer to http://www.dbs.com/ratesonline/dddd.html for all the interest rates between DBS and POSB and you'll find that savings account is the highest in the comparison table.

Inside Tekong BMT - It's $50.
50 bucks for 24hours is damn low!
Originally posted by bladez87:50 bucks for 24hours is damn low!
If I didn't remember wrongly
Tekong's Guard Duty is only 12 hours.
$50/$400 X 100% = 12.5% of your Monthly Salary.
Hourly Paid - $50/12 = $4.16
For Tekong Working Hours
1 Day - 0530hours - 2130hours = 16hours
1 Week - 5.5 Days = 16 X 5.5 hours = 88hours. (Usually Saturday - Halfday)
1 Month - 88 hours X 4 = 352 hours
Average Hourly Paid - $400 / 352 hours = $1.136
Profit Margin of Guard Duty over Normal Working Hours :
($4.16/$1.136) X 100% = 306%
Do your mathematics la.
Considering NS is a DIE DIE MUST DO LIABILITY
They give you $400 + Credits to spend + Lodging + Utility Bills + Food = Good Enough.
Don't grumble la.
the truth is 50 dollars is very low compared to unit rates which can go from 100+ to 200 for duty. It's that 'good'.
However since a recruit only earns 400 as compared to perhaps a corporal who may earn 500++, I can understand the dispairty.
Your equation of 400+ credit + etc... while it seems good for a liability, there are soldiers out there who might have to support an ailing parent, a newly set up family..and to them 400 is tough, it must bring them through alot of hardships.
For most of us, 400 may seem quite a fair bit, but the individual opportunity cost is really great.
I remember got guy tried to sell BOS duty for $400 for weekend ...
In some places, where RSMs, etc, bound to 'stun' ppl, or turn outs are more frequent, the 'bribe' certainly need to go more than $50 ...
Get IPPT gold $400
Marksman get $200
$600 free from SAF!
IPPT Incentives are $200/100 for G/S (NSF).
Incentive for range is $200 each time.
Recruits don't get monetary incentives.

NS... they underpay you , National slavery.
