Speaking for Arty .... All gunners (& the mortarmen of old -- they're also in Arty) are mustered via mono-intake, although some of the ex-recruits are vocated as 7-tonner (or M113) drivers after BMT.

Likewise, you can get posted to the formation as officers (specializing after the 2nd-stage Service Term while in OCS), NCOs (specializing after BSLC in SISPEC) or technical vocationalists (after BMTC in Tekong), all three groups first undergoing requisite training at SOAY. How to get shortlisted? Generally speaking, your various course results, trainers' feedback, MAPAS scores, unit vacancies, etc. are all factors.
At the unit itself, you can get posted in as signallers, drivers, medics, storemen, clerks, et al. None are specifically Arty-trained although, for operational reasons, a lot of them end up inducted with the technical stuff & SOPs. Some of these outfield could later get to fire off an arty round or two, at least with the old SP mortars (mounted inside M113s) which used to go for live firing almost every week. The 155mm howitzers can only fire overseas, where every aspect of each mission is deliberately controlled anyway & so sometimes the order will come down asking if anyone wants to have a go at pulling the lanyard. First come, first served .... -
The truth is, you can't choose your vocation. Everything depends on where they need you...its really random.
They always say you can submit your request, but its bull....
Even regulars don't get to choose...unless you want to sign up for SOF, then you will definitely get a chance to go Commandos.
For arty/armour, nope. -

Most AIs & tankees started off from mono-intakes. My route to Armour is a not so common one ... My BMT was trained by Guards personnel, then kana to Armour for trade course, bla bla bla and eventually became roving team, became instructor and commander at 3 different Armour units before ORD. During reservist, join an unit half way through their 13 cycles with no one I knew, then when the unit stand down, i hop to another unit.
Are there still roving teams now? -
For the men....they are mostly from mono-intake, direct intake into unit from BMT.
Specialists and officers from SISPEC/OCS respectively, after BSLC or at Pro-Term.
Its totally random, depending on operational needs, can't choose.
Its not a CCA/ECA, its an operational army for fighting...you can't choose what you like/prefer. -
carrying/loading mortar shells = cool?
Too heavy to be cool. You'll likely be cursing & swearing hauling the ammo around by the afternoon of any live firing. To agak-agak, a 120mm mortar round weighs 30 lbs, while a 155mm projectile is some 100 lbs each.
Sup sup suay when compared to manpacking the 120mm base plate (some 160 lbs) alone. It was traditional for Arty &, I believe, Armour peng to hump the bladdy thing Ninja-turtle style during their road marches. Presumbly, Support Coy in infantry units now also do that,ever since the SAF upgraded from the 81mm's (80 lbs?). -

I from armour! But damn I hate big guns! Firing is fun, cleaning is MORE FUN. Try 48hrs only sleep 2hrs due to cleaning weapon and vehicles after training + with lots of tekan? If you like, take armour... Dirty, tired, stress...

i'm from armour too. seriously. it sucks big time. i don't even get to slp in 48hrs just to clean weapon. and our field camp is ALMOST WEEKLY! it ain't fun.

for regulars, when they sign , they always give them a choice, but really after you sign, they will tell u sorry...haa, serious.
Only Commando/SOF/Intelligence will never get re-vocated. -
Vocation doesn't really matter for regulars. Rather, they'll sign on more with one of the various formations &, even for farmers, can aim for (at least) CSM or OC before their first contract ends. Might serve a stint as an instructor at the formation school too, in between combat-unit postings as he climbed up the COC.

i would like to add....cleaning of arty veh./armor vehicles...pull track.....prepare for LRI is hell as preparing for overseas exercise as u mostly likely have to clean the vehicles EVERY INCH MUST BE CLEANED EVERYTTHING!!..TS does this sound scary....well truth is like that mah...Originally posted by Fireindahouse:carrying/loading mortar shells = cool?
