As for now... Attitude 2 please
This nation
is worth defending. Our very existence proves two things 1) The American concept of democracy is not the only thing that works 2)Other forms of government can function on the world stage with the americans. Why do you think the Chinese government is so interested in us? We are one of the few nations that are successfully moving from a 'dictatorship' to a democracy in a way that
does not threaten the welfare, social stability or economic prosperity of the people If that is not worth defending to you, just look at how other countries took up democracy too fast and how they ended up.
Ultimately, the nation and the government values the welfare, interest and happiness of the people. The very fact that you are online and expressing your views on the forum proves this. That we progressed to this in only 43 years should astound
each and every single one of us. Look, even if you want to take the cynical view, think of it this way: The PAP wants to stay in power forever right? What is the only sustainable way for it to do so? The only sustainable way is to ensure that the welfare of the people is taken care of on a
sustainable basis. Their decisions may be right or wrong, but you have to admit that their self interest lies with ensuring that Singapore endures and prospers.
Finally, what do you mean by social equality? Is there a social inequality in Singapore that is artificial? I do not think so.
Complaining about the status quo may be universal, and it shows that we think that something could be better, and that is good. But we must also be realistic and look around us. Can you really say that your way of life now is not worth defending?
