In this materialistic world, is patriotism still considered a virtue? We can easily associated patriotism of a male Singaporean teenager to his attitude to NS.
Attitude/Perspective 1
See that National Service is vital to the safety of all Singaporeans, properties etc. Hence he views that serving NS is his responsilibilty.
This is what I called the nation before self attitude.
Attitude/Perspective 2
Regardless what people explain to him about the importance of NS, he will still skip NS if given the choice. His mindset is 'I din really give a sh!t about NS and national welfare & security. Leave the defence of Singapore to pple like freedom fighter aka infantry.' Hence, given the choice, he will choose not serve his NS.
However, we all know that by law, every fit male has to serve NS. lan lan have to serve. No choice.
Self before nation attitude.
So which attitude do you have? ok I admitted I have the 2nd attitude. Given the choice, I will definitely choose not to serve NS la.

And how will the influx of foreigners PR and Singaporeans change the perspective of NS, and patriotism to Singapore? -

If this nation is worth defending in the first place; if this nation values the welfare, interests and happiness of the people; if democracy means social equality... I'd defend this nation...

This nation is worth defending. Our very existence proves two things 1) The American concept of democracy is not the only thing that works 2)Other forms of government can function on the world stage with the americans. Why do you think the Chinese government is so interested in us? As for now... Attitude 2 please
Ultimately, the nation and the government values the welfare, interest and happiness of the people. The very fact that you are online and expressing your views on the forum proves this. That we progressed to this in only 43 years should astound each and every single one of us. Look, even if you want to take the cynical view, think of it this way: The PAP wants to stay in power forever right? What is the only sustainable way for it to do so? The only sustainable way is to ensure that the welfare of the people is taken care of on a sustainable basis. Their decisions may be right or wrong, but you have to admit that their self interest lies with ensuring that Singapore endures and prospers.
Finally, what do you mean by social equality? Is there a social inequality in Singapore that is artificial? I do not think so.
Complaining about the status quo may be universal, and it shows that we think that something could be better, and that is good. But we must also be realistic and look around us. Can you really say that your way of life now is not worth defending? -

Who gave you to right to judge another citizen?
We may disagree with their stand, but don't forget we bear arms to defend those rights to freedom of speech and expression, even if they are viewed as dispensable by politicians.

Attitude 1 or 2 doesnt matter if you are a Singaporean still living in Singapore.You have to dig your hole and point your rifle in front when the time come.

hmm maybe singapore should cut down NS like taiwan lidat .. coz most of the time we slack our lives away doing nothing in camp... if nothing to do den ORD earlier better
