  Hmm, actually I suggest $99 and not $88. $99 in Chinese sounds like jiujiu mah. So yeah. And yeah, ask if your date can go with u anot lor.

  If you don't plan to go, inform him beforehand. He'll be too busy with his wedding to be offended -- once-in-a-lifetime event & all that. But even the most easygoing guy can be annoyed if his invited guest ignores the "RSVP" protocol.
  
  Give at least enough to cover your attendence share of the banquet cost. Note where the event shall be held, & estimate accordingly. Some tips:-
  
  -- Buffet usually cost $10-15 per pax, so top yours up to about $20. (No need to auspiciously inflate up to, say, $28. The redness of the $10 notes is suffice enough).
  
  -- Restaurant packages usually charge $440-$550 per table, so your expected share is 10% of it. ($48 or one $50 note is favorable; no one will nitpick even if your ang pao turn out a little undervalued.)
  
  -- Hotel ballrooms are the most prestigious, priced at $600 to $1000+ per table. Emphasize on the propitious dollar number if you don't know the real sum or can't be bothered to find out. (Maxing out at, say, $88 or two $50 notes is acceptable.)
  
  -- ROM or church wedding, with no scheduled makan, don't need obligatory red packet. Can give a present instead (eg. household item or even a gift certificate.)

  I think nowadays it depends more on appointment than rank. In my limited experience, the CSM will be addressed as encik by everybody company level and below, while RSM will be addressed as encik by everybody battalion level and below etc etc.

  I always call him encik or staff wong. although some of my mates like to call him by his name. He dun mind too. He is a very crappy person if u know him well. But in uniform he always get our outfirst respect. I use to hang out with him usually over the weekends, but recently he is busy preparing his wedding. Just only he sms me ask me die die must attend leh. Cos he know I am good drinker haha.

  I still feel that 'Encik' is reserved for rank, not appointment.
  
  Last time I call my SSG 'encik' because there were rumours of his promotion. sekali, never get, really just rumours. On 1st July that year, I reverted to call him Staff.
  
  When a SSG CSM gets posted to another appointment, everyone will call him Staff. Why upgrade him before he is due ?
