46 SAF servicemen honoured for contributions to overseas missions
SINGAPORE: Forty—six Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) servicemen who participated in various overseas missions in Afghanistan, the Gulf and Timor Leste received the SAF Overseas Service Medals at a ceremony Thursday evening.
The medals were given out to members of the medical team deployed as part of the UN sanctioned New Zealand Defence Force Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan.
Servicemen deployed with the UN Integrated Mission in Timor Leste were also honoured.
Crew members of the Air Force’s KC—135 tanker aircraft deployed to the Gulf between April and July this year in support of the multinational reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan were also given the medals.
Families of the recipients, senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and SAF were present at the ceremony.
Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen highlighted that "Singapore’s contributions to peace support missions reflect our commitment as a responsible member of the international community. While the SAF’s primary mission must still be to defend Singapore, we contribute within our means to international peace support missions, relief and reconstruction efforts. This commitment acknowledges that in today’s interconnected world, all countries must do their part to maintain security and stability." — CNA/ac
