Last week, my friend's son tried to download a ringtone from Funmobile,
who regularly advertised in the New Paper. These advertisements
tend to highlight their so called "cheap prices"in big bold letters, but at the
bottom of the ad will state that "users agree to become members" By that it
means that the user agree to pay $4.99 membership fee per week.
Needless to say, many children will download without reading the fine print
and end up paying the membership fee. My friend's son was unlucky enough
to send the wrong sms to discontinue the service and have to keep paying
$4.99 a few times until the service was terminated properly.
There seems to be a trend towards making profits these days by capitalising
on the ignorance and vulnerability of people. Not so long ago we read about
old folks being cajoled to sign up to buy unit trusts by bank employees.
The businessman in the street is certainly getting more creative these days
in making money but certainly not the authorities who are unable to nap them
because they have not "broken any laws."
Your friend's son probably didn't send 'the wrong sms' to discontinue... They've made it such that there's a minimum MUST for usage or subscription...
The authorities can't do anything to nap them as they've not broken any law?
They are just PLAIN LAZY and playing 'TAIJI' all the time...
