World Champion to miss Olympic Games
July 15, 2004
It was earth-shattering news when China announced on 14 July its team formation for the upcoming Olympic Games; Xia Xuanze, the reigning World Champion is out - his place will be taken up by Chen Hong.
Li Yongbo, head coach of the Chinese national team, keenly aware of the controversy surrounding the decision, explained that Xia has not fully recovered from an injury inflicted during the World Championship. He further elaborated that the coaching team took notice of the players' recent past performances and decided that Chen's performances was better. Second in the world ranking list, Chen will be the second seeded player in the Olympics, behind by Lin Dan. The two Chinese star players will hope to avoid an early elimination round and China will stand a better chance of winning the championship, as Li further explained.
Although Xia was upset when he was informed of the decision the night before, the Chinese players have no choice but to accept the coaches' joint decision. Widely tipped as the inevitable choice, Xia took the most unexpected news philosophically, "My minor injury has not affected my continuous training. I have not been absent from training for any stretch of time and am feeling good."
"I don't think injury is the reason for my exclusion. But since this is a joint decision of the leadership, I have no problem with it, though very much to my personal regret. Well, life is punctuated with regrets, isn't it?" After the shock announcement, Xia has maintain his cheerful spirit by having a good time with his teammates, believing that time and friendly support will smooth out any ill feelings.
Chen Hong responded to the news with unexpected calm, "I have never given up hope and am pleased for the Olympic opportunity. I shall now devote myself to training and better preparation." Gao Ling, Chen's girlfriend, is said to be elated that the couple will go to the Olympics together.
However, coach Li Yongbo might have tried to calm the waves, the exclusion of Xia from the national team has stirred up much interest and negative responses. The citation of recent past performances does not stand up to scrutiny. In the recent past, Chen Hong's performance against major international opponents is hardly inspiring, 1 win / 6 losses against Peter Gade of Denmark, 0 win / 5 losses against Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia and 2 wins / 2 losses against Wong Choong Hann of Malaysia. This pales against Xia's more impressive records: 2 wins / 3 losses against Gade and Hidayat, and a stretch of 8 wins over Wong.
The Chinese media also find the decision disturbing. Among the first mostly negative responses, Sina.com, one of China's most popular website, queried the choice and pointed out that Chen did not have the strong self-will to face tough competitions. He often failed to perform his best in critical games, such as his defeat to Korean Lee Hyun II at the Sudirman Cup final last year. In contrast, Xia has, time and again, demonstrate his resilience in major tournaments. The debate will continue and has somewhat coloured China's long march to the Olympics.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
