Is Taufik unbeatable in home ground?
In a splendid match, Olympics champion, Taufik Hidayat beats Worls No. 1 Lin Dan of China to secure his ticket to the final of the 5* Djarum Indonesia Open. This victory could be very well represent a title victory for the Indonesian as he will now face Chen Hong in Sunday's final, whom he has always beaten in similar situation.
There was more than just one badminton games occuring on centre court of the packed Tennis Indoor Stadium. It was more of the revenge of a match which never happened. A match between Olympics champion and World No. 1, with a whole nation's pride in the hands of its protege, Taufik Hidayat. Things didn't start out in the best way, however, as Lin Dan was all over the court, outplaying Taufik 15-5 in the 1st game.
But Taufik usually starts matches slowly to build up both pace and confidence, and that's what happened throughout the 2nd game, where Lin Dan struggled against the wind, while Taufik was gaining more and more confidence to win it 15-5 as well. At the end of second game, Lin Dan didn't even bother catching up, knowing that it will have to go overtime into a decider. Yet a lesson will be taught to the Chinese youngster: do not give Taufik easy points in front of his home crowd, as he is never better when in leading.
The Olympics gold medalist kept his good run in the 3rd and final game, even if it was Lin Dan who was controlling most of the points. Eventually, Taufik's smooth defences made Lin Dan lost patience and try to hit the lines. On a few occasions, it worked, but for some other points, his attacks went wide and Taufik kept building towards success. Changing ends at 8-5, the Indonesian saw his opponent react to catch up to 9-9 while the whole crowd was going wild. Even the medical staff - who had to come on court to try to heal Lin Dan's bleeding finger after a dive - were cheering for their compatriot.
The peak of the match was when both players reached 11-11, but once again, Taufik lifted by his compatriots' support took the remaining points, while Lin Dan was struggling under pressure. The Indonesian won 5-15, 15-5, 15-11 and will be looking forward Sunday's match, when he meets Chen Hong again in home event final. For Lin Dan, there was alot of sadness after the match, "I had prepared very well for this event, and I wasn't afraid of playing Taufik. Today, the audience didn't bother me, but the wind did much more," said Lin Dan, hinted that the final would be quite undecided. "Difficult to predict as both are really good," he said. -
