SINGAPORE: Some 80 players from Asia have slugged it out for top honours in the first Singapore Invitational for Call of Duty 4 — a popular video game.
The four—day tournament, which ended on 15 June, is Singapore’s first made—for—TV computer gaming tournament shot in high definition.
Eleven Singapore teams and five teams from Malaysia, China and Australia battled it out in Call of Duty 4 — a futuristic conflict set in the Middle East, Russia and former Soviet states.
In this S$2 million extravaganza, the arena—style settings brought the experience to a new level — for both the players and their supporters.
Justin Bausch, leader of Team Immunity, Australia, said: "The lights and the spectators really get your heart pumping. It’s a really thrilling experience to be here."
Hu Zhiyi, leader of Team Garena, China, agreed: "The environment is better, and having a lot of supporters here today also inspires me to persevere and do my best."
Fifteen monitors track what the players see, as well as all the on—stage action.
Managing director of Mega Media Jonathan Foo said: "We think that it’s going to set a new standard in game tournaments."
Malaysian supporter Fariz Farid said: "The crowd is very energetic and it has the feel of sportsmanship all around."
The tournament will air from July to November on SingTel’s mioTV service. — CNA/ac
