  A spokesperson from LTA say that the bus trial will last at least one year, to help them understand the challenges of operating this type of bus under our weather conditions, and the kind of environment our buses operate in. This would help them to improve the way they operate the alternative-energy buses.

  According to the tender document, the hybrid buses may have many new features, such as an automatic bus loading counter, a device that keeps bus driver awake, and a tyre pressure monitor system.

  French trainmaker Alstom eyes Singapore electric bus market

  French trainmaker Alstom estimates it will have an electric bus ready for the Singapore market by 2019 as it looks to road transport for growth.

  The company's aim to diversify into other mobility businesses gained traction with its recently unveiled electric low-floor buses and autonomous shuttles.

  Alstom has been heavily reliant on rail and related businesses, with 43 per cent of revenue currently attributable to this segment.

  Mr Jean-Francois Beaudoin, Alstom's senior vice-president of Asia-Pacific, told The Straits Times: "We want to grow a new business - electric buses."

  He said Alstom's recently launched Aptis battery-powered, low-floor buses offered "a tram-like service" and, unlike others, are designed and conceptualised as electric vehicles from the start.

  Currently, two prototypes have been supplied to the French transport authority for assessment.

  Mr Beaudoin said the company will target the "large market" in the Ile-de-France region, "which will lead the transformation from diesel buses to electric ones in France".

  It is targeting Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain.

  Alstom is also looking to introduce its e-buses in Singapore, and has informally presented the Aptis to the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

  "There is a push from LTA to move towards electric buses," Mr Beaudoin said. "The product will require modifications to make it suitable for Singapore."

  This is because "a lot of energy" will be used for air-conditioning. "This requires a different battery capacity while ensuring that costs do not become prohibitive," he said.

  Nevertheless, he estimates that a product will be ready for Singapore by 2019.

  Mr Beaudoin noted: "Alstom has already proven its technology leadership with metros and tramways, and we expect our entry into the electric bus market... to revolutionise urban transportation."

  Elsewhere, the French group acquired a minority stake in EasyMile, a manufacturer of driverless shuttles, earlier this year. The €14 million (S$22.6 million) investment is part of Alstom's ambition to become a one-stop urban mobility solutions provider.

  EasyMile operates an autonomous shuttle in Singapore's Gardens by the Bay, and in a business park in California.

  It recently started similar operations in Taiwan, and is in talks to expand its presence there.

  For the second quarter ended June 30, Alstom booked €1.9 billion of orders, compared with €900 million over the same period last year.

  The company stated that sales, at €1.9 billion, were up 5 per cent organically over the first quarter of this year.

  It added that by 2020, adjusted Ebit (earnings before interest and tax) margin should reach around 7 per cent, up from an average of 5.3 in the last three years.

  LTA should have awarded the Hybrid Package to MAN . MAN uses Series Hybrid rather than Parallel hybrid and also MAN Lion City Hybrid is based on German A21 Chassis ( A22 for us ) which mean local operator are easier to learn about the Hybrid bus as they have the knowledge of the bus (A22)

      The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the tender to procure 50 diesel hybrid buses at about S$30 million to Volvo East Asia (Pte) Ltd.
  
  2.  This is part of LTA’s efforts to build a more environmentally friendly public bus fleet. Not only can commuters expect quieter and smoother rides, bus captains can also enjoy a more comfortable working environment. To prepare our bus workforce for this change, LTA will work with industry partners to help upgrade and upskill our bus professionals through the Singapore Bus Academy.
  
  Diesel Hybrid Buses
  
  3.  Building on LTA’s single-unit diesel hybrid bus trials, 50 diesel hybrid buses will be rolled out gradually for service by the second half of 2018. These low-emission buses will help us better understand the operational challenges that come with the wider deployment of such buses under our tropical climate and traffic conditions, which will enable us to calibrate our approach in adopting diesel hybrid buses in the future. This will also help bus technicians and engineers better understand the technical challenges in maintaining such buses. Details of the services which the 50 diesel hybrid buses will be deployed to will be announced closer to the implementation date.
  
  4.  In response to LTA’s tender, Volvo East Asia (Pte) Ltd. had earlier submitted a high quality proposal with the best value for money and hence was awarded the contract. The company has a strong track record, with their buses forming about a third of the entire public bus fleet currently in Singapore. In determining the award of the tender, besides the price, LTA also considered many quality aspects of the participating bidders, such as their relevant experience, track records, technical capabilities and compliance to local regulations.

  5.  To help LTA gather more up-to-date information on the latest electric bus and charging technologies, a Request for Information for electric buses was put up by LTA on 2 October 2017. The tender to procure 60 electric buses will also be called soon. Commuters can expect to see electric buses deployed for service by 2019.

  Parallel hybrid using engine transmission meaning jerky rides but advantage is going uphill when fully loaded.Anyway,I suspect its the 7900 hybrid B5LH 12m 5L 240hp/918nm 4 cylinders diesel plus Volvo I-SAM 160hp/800nm Electric motors..

  Combined power is 400hp/1718nm hahaha

  Yeah i know cause 50 buses cost 30mil..Its CBU version same like the UK type.

  Sadly,they dont use series hybrid from BAE or Siemens.

  Seriously,LTA should get more Hybrids than electric buses.

  Im skeptical about full electric buses in our environment.

  SG4001J is not fully tested on full day shift.Unless they can built more stronger batteries which has a combined power of 260hp/1200nm.

  The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has put up a tender for the Procurement of Electric Buses (E-Buses) on Tuesday, 12 December 2017 (Contract Ref. PT323.)

  As announced by Second Minister for Transport Ng Chee Meng during the Ministry of Transport’s Committee of Supply Debate in March 2017, the tenders will be called for the purchase of 50 hybrid buses and 60 electric buses this year. This will allow the LTA to expand its trial of such “green” vehicles, which while environmentally-friendly, are more costly and less suitable for the island’s tropical climate. Not only do vehicles operating here consume a lot of energy for air-conditioning, their batteries and hybrid systems work less efficiently in our warm and humid environment.

  The Diesel Hybrid bus tender was awarded to Volvo earlier this year, who will be delivering Volvo 7900 Hybrid buses expected to enter service starting from the second half of 2018.

  Upon procuring the Electric Buses, the Land Transport Authority will allocate the buses to the Bus Operators (SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, Tower Transit, Go-Ahead Singapore) to operate on selected bus services. Currently, a large majority of LTA’s bus assets are Euro V compliant Diesel buses.

  A battery-powered all-electric bus had previously been trialled locally by a Public Transport Operator. From November 2016 to May 2017, a BYD K9 bus was operating with Go-Ahead Singapore under a LTA-initiated trial. Previous trials in Singapore have involved diesel-hybrid buses such as the Sunlong SLK6121UF14H, and Zhongtong LCK6121G HEV, and Volvo B5RLE Hybrid.
