Bus drivers from China should not be allowed driving our public bus… The lady China SBS bus driver service no. 100 just ask these 3 kids who lost their way to get off the bus just like that… Why not she stops the bus for awhile & assist these 3 kids to the bus-stop just across the road to board service no.100???

She can’t even communicate in English with our locals and yet she can be a bus captain??? What type of society are we to become when we bring in foreigners who do not have social responsibilities towards the locals & Singapore??? Luckily I was there & assist these kids to their home destination…

I realize most PRC SL dont know how to speak English or spoke little English. when handling situations, they just kept spewing Mandarin words to grab hold of the situation. I think its time to attract local with premiums or incentives to the local transport industry instead of hiring cheap labour who is willing to work and will leave the country once they are rich enough.

Govt always say Singaporeans very choosy..Well at first i believe till i have went for several interviews.Even at a private bus company the HR prioritise foreigners over Singaporeans due to their cheaper basic pay.Most Singaporeans including me all have to wait for call.My neighbour who is retrench from his 23 years old job also have a hard time finding one even though he is willing to take home lower pay.The Job is a cleaner supervisor.Even SMRT following that trend.I got 2 graduated friends who is jobless for nearly 4 months.All offer them lower than expected.

Not sure why PRC takes precedence. Imagine a day when buses don't come due to lack of drivers, and no Singaporean wants to be a bus driver.

There is always Burmese,Pinoys or Indian that can speak English can fill in the gap..Why is it so special that must have China in all sectors?You give attractive benefits like 2 days off per week im sure many Singaporeans will interested to join..Went for SBST and SMRT interview and there are as many Locals as Foreigners applying for e job

Indeed, by the same virtue, I'm not sure why PRC takes precedence. If an Burmese driver gets into an accident, it is because he is Burmese?

And to your observation that there are as many locals as foreigners applying for the job where you went for the interview, I quote:

"However, we could only attract 76 Singaporeans to join us as BCs in 2014 as compared to more than 1,000 Malaysians signed up as BCs last year."

This quota is controlled by MOM.

The numbers from their current online quota calculator indicates PRC quota is at 8%. In 2012, the actual percentage stands at 13%

If the figures in the calculator are correct, then the operator can no longer hire additional PRC drivers. Besides, there should be a lot more Hong Kong and Taiwanese drivers in Singapore (unless, they are all taken up by Malaysian drivers).

The inability to hire Singaporean drivers brings massive grief to the operators, because it directly affects their foreign driver quota.

However, if any operator tries to raise Singaporean drivers' pay to increase recruitment, pay disparity will increase and it will run into the same set of problems faced by SMRT a few years back.

Yeah. And that's why I worry about the day when we cannot find Singaporean bus drivers.

I wasn't advocating having more PRC drivers, but putting it in the title seems to suggest that being PRC is the reason you cause accidents, that's not objective. Can you imagine Singaporeans attacking PRCs in a riot just because of that reason? We ought to be more clear-headed than that.

Thank you for the analysis though. I guess it was good fortune that we have had more Malaysian drivers, many of whom quit after the exchange rate then made them more reluctant to endure the hardship of commuting daily to work here.

The public bus industry here is not sustainable. You know that when shares go up because because an operator has lost a parcel tender!

A lot of money has gone into buying new buses, and these particular buses are not cheap to run. Good foreign drivers are difficult to retain with the current level of remuneration. New operators competing for drivers will lead to the inevitable - wages will increase to what should have been the true wage rate.

Without heavy subsidy from the government, I suspect the minimum fare commuters have to pay in order to keep operators afloat in a couple of years time is at least S$3.00 cash, S$2.50 for card.

No no,Dont get me wrong but dont you think that almost all of the ruckus here created by PRCs?Why?Find out for yourself.With due respect im not blaming certain race for an accidents/incidents as ive emphasise there is always a bad apple among a tree.What i can say is we can survive without much PRCs working here either cause we had more than enough Malaysians willing to work.As for the MOM Quota companies just hire Singaporeans just for the sake of it,Full stop.The truth hurts yes it is..That is what i am experiencing not just by mouth action.Lastly i shall rest my case here and would not want to proceed further,Thank You.

How to attract more Singaporeans when they the HR is very selective and double standards?Out of 10 Locals apply only 3 were chosen where out of 10 Malaysians and 5 PRCs apply almost all is selected?

Abang, not say hire means can hire. You know better. Have you asked them why they are selective? I'd like to know, and I hope it is not discrimination against Singaporeans.

One day Malaysians might balik kampung too. Even Malaysians find it tough. The industry was suffering from that a few years back. It will come back one day when the equation is right. It can come from elsewhere, it can come from Singapore too, but we are just lucky LTA is there to foot the bill this time round. You and I know the days when fares were too low and wages had to be depressed.

this is life here- non mandrain speakers ( non chinese) will be in for a rough ride? you can see it and feel it in every pulse of the working life- she should have driven to the end of the journey at Ghim moh or kallang and handed over the kids to the depot captain to take charge

I chatted with a BC once. He told me his typical week-day begins at 4am (wake up), and ends at 9pm (reach home).

He works 6 days a week.

Don't say Singaporeans weak, but when Singaporeans feel they have a choice, do you think they would take it up?

I fully sympathize with BCs but are you 100% sure his day lasts from 4am to 9pm?

That should be T shift, but 90 hours a week is insane! 15*6=90 (Minus 2 hours per day)

Yup. He does have a lengthy break in afternoon. So it won't breach the union's thing.

And unless the express bus he drives early in the morning is a ghost bus, and the normal bus he drives during off-peak after that also ghost bus, and then the evening express route also ghost bus, then I am pretty sure it's him.

It's a rather strange question to ask.

Akin to saying: Are you sure it's 5 o'clock and not 5pm...?

Though to be fair, it's hard to believe.

Until you get a BC that drives you to work, and then drives you home from work practically almost everyday, and then bump into him even on Saturday mornings, I really don't think you have a sense of how tough being a BC may well be.

I have taken his buses this way for 2 years already. But according to him, he has been doing this routine already for 10 years. And I don't see why I should be cynical at that.

It's a split (S) shift. In other countries, a car would have benefited him greatly in cutting traveling time to and from the depot. There is no such luxury in Singapore.

Of course, one solution is to convert it into A/P shift and have two drivers, but who would want to pay for 2 drivers when you can pay 1.25 of a driver's wage to do something similar in fulfilling demand?
