HK's method. But I don't see people here willing to walk more than just a few hundred metres out to the 大路, sometimes involving a uphill walk, just to board a direct bus service...
alternatively, we can create a new fare product ourselves.
same as the money adults pay to school bus company for the school bus to transport their children to school. we can introduce a tickecting ordering system, where buses are supplied based on the actual number of people going to take it.
a person buy a ticket to take a particular bus (of a particular registration number) at a particular time. the particular bus arrive, only the person with the ticket can board the bus.
this may work, because this may lead to equilibrium of supply and demand.
when we supply near-exact instead of over-supply, operating costs will obviously lower.
when we supply near-exact instead of under-supply, everyone can take bus.
good idea hor. :)

u can be the Chief Executive of LTA.. or can even go become PM...
so if in the end only one person buy the ticket, so the bus will come or will not come?? talk is alway easy.. .but to do it on actual ground, is DIFFERENT THING.

99 (Jurong West) can be shortened to terminate at Jurong East, since not many people actually take it all the way to Clementi. Likewise for 198, which is only heavily utilised up to Jurong East/West Avenue 1.
Have a few long-distance bus routes that perform the role of MRT, then the rest is only to provide first-and-last mile travel.
Do we really need long-distance bus routes that go to every corner of Singapore, or do we just need buses at every corner? Why not have long-distance routes ply main roads, while the other roads let short-distance routes ply?
I think it's more effective this way.
Yes. I know this may result in some bus interchanges becoming redundant, as new bus interchanges are built at new strategic locations (need not be next to MRT, just need to be a convenient place for bus routes to terminate). So be it. Let this be an investment. Short-term expenditure for Long-term savings.
Workers from the International Business Park do take sv99 to Jurong East MRT during the peak hours. Mind you. While sv52 and sv105 do connect Jurong East with IBP, they take a longer route via Toh Guan.

well, just sharing with you an idea that I have. no right or wrong.
well, if in the end only one person buy the ticket, it means the service not viable to provide. since buy already, of course must provide the service mah. after that, we should cancel the service. when comes to providing public bus services, majority wins.
of course, when we implement, there will be some challenges. We need a ticket inspector on every bus to ensure that only people with the ticket board the bus.
alternatively, we can simply implement a penalty system. if a person takes the bus without a valid ticket or over-ride, he pays more money.
well, just sharing an idea I have. If not feasible, we can reject it.

To add to it 99 has many people taking it from Jurong West to IBP and Traders Center.

Just have 1 service for each street and ask everyone to go to MRT/Bus Int to transfer. Don't forget that not everyone is willing to take the MRT for 1 or 2 stations, or transfer from feeder to MRT and to feeder again. Especially for inter-town travel. Who would like to travel from Sengkang to Ang Mo Kio by NEL, CCL and NSL when sv 50 is already there? Likewise, services like 3 and 28 are all doing very well even though they ply the so-called minor roads. This kind of services really enhance inter-town connectivity. Even for some city-bound services, it works - imagine if 972 doesn't make one big round in Bukit Panjang.
I said "a few", not "a".

We could always chop up existing routes and make some sectors express. svcs like 28 are doing well NOT coz it serves many areas. In fact i guarantee you, less than 10 of its pax really take it from the east to central Singapore.
And feeder - MRT - feeder demand is very very low. Like reallg very low. So how does that even matter?
Besides, why wont anyone take the MRT if it is FASTER than bus? Surely you wouldnt take like bus 82 from Nex to Punggol MRT, when the MRT could cover the same trip in a fraction of the time taken by bus?
...
A new bus service 503 starting soon. from Clementi, pass by important roads (Holland Road, Napier Road, Tanglin Road, Orchard Road), then go to Dhoby Ghaut, Little India, then express again from Boon Keng MRT Station, via Bendemeer Underpass, Upper Serangoon Viaduct, Tampines Road, Hougang Avenue 3, Bartley Road East to Tampines Avenue 10; then loop at Tampines Street 12 with new bus stops. I couldn't trust the MRT, it is also overcrowded, can't even get a seat at Clementi MRT.

Sorry guys, this idea is not that new.
And neither it is that impractical (otherwise the article wouldn't have made it to BBC in the first place).
